Electrical installations of buildings - Part 7-703: Requirements for special installations or locations - Rooms and cabins containing sauna heaters

The particular requirements of this part of IEC 60364 apply to: - sauna cabins erected on site, e.g. in a location or in a room; - the room where the sauna heater is, or the sauna heating appliances are installed. In this case the whole room is considered as the sauna. They do not apply to prefabricated sauna cabins complying with a relevant equipment standard. Where facilities like cold water basins or showers, etc. are installed, the requirements of Part 7-701 also apply. The main technical changes with respect to the previous edition concern the updating of requirements to take into account the evolution in sauna equipment, with particular emphasis on prefabricated cabins. In addition, in response to a need from installers, there has been some elaboration on temperature repartition in saunas as well as protection against electric shock. Finally, the four zones described in the first edition have now been reduced to three zones.

Overview

IEC 60364-7-703 specifies electrical safety and installation requirements for rooms and cabins containing sauna heaters. It supplements the general IEC 60364 series by addressing the particular hazards of high temperature, moisture and proximity to heating appliances. The standard applies to on-site erected sauna cabins and rooms where the sauna heater is installed (the whole room is considered the sauna) and excludes prefabricated cabins that comply with a relevant equipment standard.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Three temperature zones: The previous four-zone model was reduced to three zones. Zone definitions are based on distance from the sauna heater, floor level and thermal insulation boundaries (zone 1: the heater volume-0.5 m around the heater; zone 2: outside zone 1 up to 1.0 m above floor; zone 3: remaining sauna volume).
  • Protection against electric shock:
    • RCDs: All sauna circuits, except the sauna heater itself, must have residual current devices (RCDs) with rated residual operating current ≤ 30 mA.
    • SELV/PELV: Use of SELV/PELV is covered; note national exceptions (e.g., PELV not permitted in Italy).
    • Barriers and insulation: Equipment must be protected by barriers/enclosures (minimum IPXXB or IP2X) or insulation able to withstand 500 V a.c. rms for 1 minute.
    • Forbidden measures: Protection by placing equipment out of reach or by non-conducting location/earth-free local equipotential bonding is not permitted.
  • Equipment selection and IP ratings:
    • Minimum degree of protection IP24 for sauna equipment; IPX5 if cleaning by water jets is likely.
    • In zone 1 only sauna heater equipment is permitted; in zone 2 no special heat-resistance requirement; in zone 3 equipment must withstand 125 °C and cable insulation 170 °C.
  • Wiring and installation:
    • Wiring should preferably be installed on the cold side of thermal insulation. If placed on the warm side (zones 1 or 3), wiring must be heat-resistant.
    • Metallic sheaths and conduits shall not be accessible in normal use.
  • Controls and outlets:
    • Functional controls for the heater may be inside the sauna per manufacturer instructions; other switchgear (e.g., lighting) must be outside. Socket-outlets are prohibited inside sauna locations.
  • Manufacturer instructions: Sauna heaters must be installed per IEC 60335-2-53 and manufacturer guidance.

Applications and users
