Overview
IEC 61591:1997/AMD1:2005 is an important amendment to the international standard that specifies the methods for measuring the performance of household range hoods. Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this amendment enhances the base standard by including critical updates to test conditions, definitions, and measurement techniques. Its scope applies to range hoods with both internal and external blowers designed for household kitchen use, providing manufacturers, testers, and regulatory bodies with a harmonized methodology to assess appliance performance objectively.
This amendment aims to ensure accurate and consistent evaluation of key functional parameters such as airflow, grease absorption, odour extraction, and noise levels. Through standardized testing practices, it contributes to the development of high-quality, energy-efficient, and user-friendly kitchen ventilation appliances.
Key Topics
External Blower Definition and Integration
- Introduces and defines the concept of an external blower, mounted separately from the range hood.
- Specifies that external blowers, when controlled by the range hood and detailed in technical documentation, are included in testing.
Installation and Test Conditions
- Requires installation according to manufacturer instructions.
- Mandates use of maximum-size ducts for connecting to blowers.
- Clarifies power supply provisions for both range hoods and external blowers during tests.
Volumetric Airflow Measurement
- Establishes pressure drop reference values related to outlet dimensions (e.g., 30 Pa for 100 mm orifice).
- Stipulates installation of odour extraction filters during airflow tests.
Grease Absorption Testing
- Defines grease filters broadly to include all removable components intended for cleaning.
- Clarifies that external blowers need not be mounted during grease absorption tests if auxiliary fans replicate airflow.
- Specifies test cookware: commercially available, uncoated pans with a solid bottom and a minimum 8 mm thickness, matching hob diameter.
- Introduces thermocouple temperature measurement requirements for accurate testing.
Odour Extraction Evaluation
- Requires sealing kitchen furniture to isolate test airspace.
- Allows substitution of external blowers with auxiliary fans during odour extraction tests.
- Advises on maintaining specific temperatures and measuring odour concentration accurately.
- Includes provisions for island range hoods tested similarly to wall-mounted units, with side cabinets removed.
Supply Cord Length and Mass Clarifications
- Updates references to supply cord length and mass measurement to include external blowers where applicable.
Noise Testing Reference
- Cross-references IEC 60704-2-13 for noise determination in range hoods.
Detailed Measurement Setup
- Provides schematics and descriptions for airflow measurement setups, including static pressure gauges, baffles, and pressure compensation chambers.
Applications
This amendment is essential for:
- Manufacturers designing and testing household range hoods, ensuring compliance with internationally recognized test methods.
- Testing laboratories and certification bodies conducting performance evaluations and safety certifications.
- Regulatory agencies setting minimum performance requirements and labeling standards for kitchen ventilation appliances.
- Consumers and stakeholders seeking verified performance claims, including airflow efficiency, grease filtration, and odour extraction capability.
- Product development teams aiming to optimize appliances for quieter operation and improved user experience, referencing noise measurement standards.
By applying these methods, stakeholders benefit from consistent, repeatable, and reliable performance data that supports innovation, market access, and consumer safety.
