Overview

IEC 60335-2-24:1997/AMD2:1999 is Amendment 2 to the IEC safety standard for household and similar electrical appliances - Part 2-24: particular requirements for refrigerating appliances, ice-cream appliances and ice-makers. The amendment updates safety, test and marking requirements, adds specific provisions for ice-cream appliances (replacing IEC 60335-2-57, 1989), and introduces measures to reduce the risk of child entrapment in refrigerators.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and classification
    • Extends Part 2-24 to include ice-cream appliances (compression-type appliances used to make ice-cream) and defines permitted rated voltages (≤ 250 V single-phase; ≤ 480 V other appliances).
  • Safety definitions
    • Flammable refrigerant defined per ISO 5149 (group 2 or 3); most unfavourable classification used where blends vary.
    • Free space defined as volumes > 60 L accessible after opening doors/lids; small spaces with any single dimension ≤ 150 mm (or two orthogonal dims ≤ 200 mm) are ignored when calculating volume.
  • Child entrapment prevention
    • Doors and lids of compartments with a free space must be openable from the inside; opening force limit is 70 N applied at up to 15 N/s.
    • Drawers accessible without opening a door that contain a free space must have a rear opening ≥ 250 mm high and ≥ two-thirds of drawer width, and be openable from the inside; tested with a 23 kg weight.
    • Self-latching locks are prohibited on doors/drawers leading to free spaces; key locks require two independent movements or automatic key ejection.
  • Test conditions and procedures
    • Pre-test operation: ice-cream appliances operated empty at rated voltage for 1 hour or max timer; other compression appliances operated 24 h then left 12 h.
    • Ambient temperature for tests: ice-cream appliances at 23 °C ± 2 °C. Other appliances tested according to climatic classes: SN/N 32 °C, ST 38 °C, T 43 °C (±1 °C).
    • Power/current measurements: operate 1 h or max timer; current averaged over any 5 min period (measurement interval ≤ 30 s); starting current exclusion guidance.
  • Abnormal operation and construction
    • Ice-makers and ice-cream appliances must not create fire, mechanical or electric shock risks during abnormal operation; faults are simulated while appliance runs under normal operation.
    • Fan motor testing exceptions and shortened locked-rotor requirements for ice-cream appliance fan motors.
  • Marking and instructions
    • Required marking includes rated power/current; ice-cream appliance instructions must list ingredients and maximum mixture quantity for normal operation.

Applications and users

This amendment is essential for:

  • Manufacturers of refrigerating appliances, ice-makers and ice-cream appliances (design and compliance).
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies performing type testing and safety verification.
  • Design and safety engineers addressing child-safety, refrigerant selection and abnormal-operation resilience.
  • Regulators and procurement agencies specifying safety requirements for household refrigeration equipment.

Related standards

  • IEC 60335-1 (general safety requirements for household appliances) - Part 2-24 supplements/modifies this.
  • ISO 5149 (refrigerant classification and safety) - normative reference for flammable refrigerants.
  • IEC 60079-20 (guidance for flammable refrigerants) referenced for some values.

10.1 Replace, on page 21, the first paragraph under "Addition" by the following:

The power input is considered to be stabilised when steady conditions are established or when

any incorporated timer operates, whichever occurs first.

10.2 Replace the text under "Addition" by the following:

The appliance is operated for a period of 1 h or the maximum setting of an incorporated timer
which ever is shorter. Excluding starting current, the maximum value of the current averaged
over any 5 min period is obtained. The interval between current measurements shall not
