Overview

IEC 60335-2-86:2002/AMD1:2005 is an essential amendment to the international safety standard for household and similar electrical appliances, specifically addressing the particular requirements for electric fishing machines. Developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this amendment enhances safety provisions reflecting practical operational conditions and electromagnetic influences on these specialized appliances.

The standard applies to electric fishing machines with rated voltages up to 250 V for single-phase and 480 V for other machines, with exceptions for permanent connections up to 1000 V. Notably, it includes specific requirements for boat mounted electric fishing machines detailed in Annex AA, ensuring comprehensive safety coverage for both land-based and marine applications.

Key Topics

  • Rated Voltage and Current
The amendment clarifies rated input voltage and current definitions for electric fishing machines, establishing boundaries for safe operational voltages:

    • Single-phase: ≤ 250 V
    • Other machines: ≤ 480 V
    • Permanent fixed wiring connections (including boats): ≤ 1000 V
  • Safety Switches and Protection Devices
    Enhanced construction requirements mandate:

    • Biased-off switches on all hand-operated catching electrodes to prevent accidental energizing.
    • Emergency stop devices on fixed electric fishing systems serving as animal barriers, which must cut voltage exceeding 12 V and feature red-colored actuators.
  • Ingress Protection (IP) Rating
To safeguard against water ingress and maintain appliance integrity:

    • Hand-held parts must meet IPX7 protection.
    • Battery compartments containing voltages above 24 V are required to have IPX7 rating as well.
  • Marking and Instructions
    Clear labeling requirements include:

    • Symbols for catching and return electrodes, distinguished by AC or DC usage referencing IEC 60417 standard symbols.
    • Specific warnings covering conditions with motor-generator sets or generators to prevent generator neutral from being connected to equipment enclosures.
  • Boat Mounted Electric Fishing Machines (Annex AA)
Annex AA introduces additional modifications for boats, including:

    • All associated electrical accessories must comply with Class III insulation and rated voltage ≤ 24 V.
    • Mandatory equipotential bonding of all accessible conductive boat surfaces excluding small parts like nameplates.
    • Requirement for two manual biased-off switches that cannot be operated by a single person, to ensure deliberate shutdown.
    • Fixed catching electrodes must be securely mounted to the boat hull during operation.
  • Supply and Connection Restrictions
To prevent unsafe electrical interchanges, equipment supplied from motor-generator sets or onboard generators must not use plugs or connectors interchangeable with standard plugs and socket types such as IEC 60083 or IEC 60906-1.

Applications

IEC 60335-2-86:2002/AMD1:2005 focuses on ensuring the safety of electric fishing machines, devices used in fishing operations that employ electrical methods for capture or containment of aquatic life. Key applications include:

  • Commercial and Recreational Fishery Equipment
Ensuring operational safety and reliability for both portable and stationary electric fishing devices utilized in lakes, rivers, and coastal waters.

  • Boat Mounted Electric Fishing Systems
Specialized requirements for marine environments address electrical hazards unique to boat installations, providing protection to operators and aquatic life, while meeting maritime safety regulations.

  • Environmental and Wildlife Protection Barriers
Fixed electric fishing systems deployed as barriers for controlling animal movement in aquatic ecosystems, with emergency stop functionalities enhancing operational control.

  • Equipment Manufacturing and Testing
Provides manufacturers and testing laboratories with stringent safety requirements, including insulation, labeling, and electromagnetic compatibility, to certify electric fishing appliances comply with international safety norms.

Related Standards

  • IEC 60335-1: General safety standard for household and similar electrical appliances, specifying basic safety requirements that complement Part 2-86.

  • IEC 60417: Collection of graphical symbols for use on equipment, referenced extensively for proper marking of electrode terminals.

  • IEC 60083 & IEC 60906-1: Standards defining plugs and socket-outlets, referenced in the amendment to restrict incompatible connector use with electric fishing machines.

  • IEC 60320-1: Standard sheets for appliance couplers, also referenced in connection safety requirements.

  • IEC IP Code (Ingress Protection): Guidelines for waterproof ratings like IPX7, critical for underwater or wet-environment electric fishing machine components.

Summary

IEC 60335-2-86:2002/AMD1:2005 Amendment 1 provides crucial updates to the safety framework for electric fishing machines, integrating practical insights about electromagnetic effects and abnormal conditions. By defining clear voltage limits, mandatory safety devices, ingress protection, and specific boat-mounted equipment rules, the amendment ensures enhanced operator safety and reliable functioning of electric fishing appliances. Manufacturers, testing bodies, and users benefit from detailed provisions that promote compliance with internationally harmonized safety requirements in aquatic and household electrical applications.
