Signalling on low-voltage electrical installations in the frequency range 3 kHz to 148,5 kHz - Part 4-1: Low voltage decoupling filters - Generic specification
This standard applies to decoupling filters installed on the low voltage mains network and operating in the frequency range 3 kHz to 148,5 kHz on low voltage mains network. It does not apply to general purpose filters for EMI suppression. It does not apply to protocol dependant devices except physical layer (frequency). It does not apply to filters incorporated in household equipment for example: washing machines and coffee machines. It specifies the impedance and the transfer function definitions, requirements and test methods of the decoupling filter and some other requirements for example Voltage Drop, Leakage Current and Form Factor. The impedance and the transfer function are referred to the decoupling filter mains power ports (ref. Figure 1). The use of the decoupling filter is considered optional; additional rules or obligations may exist that are outside the scope of this standard. The safety requirements related to decoupling filters are not covered in this standard. They are covered in an other part of the EN 50065 set of standards

Overview
EN 50065-4-1:2001 (CLC) defines a generic specification for low‑voltage decoupling filters used in mains signalling systems operating in the frequency range 3 kHz to 148.5 kHz. The standard specifies how decoupling filters shall behave and be tested on low‑voltage mains networks to support reliable mains communications (Distribution Automation, Home and Building Electronic Systems). It covers definitions, impedance and transfer‑function requirements, test methods and additional performance limits (e.g., voltage drop, leakage current). It does not cover general EMI suppression filters, protocol‑dependent devices (other than the physical frequency layer), filters built into household appliances, or safety requirements (see EN 50065‑4‑2).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Frequency bands: utility band 3–95 kHz and consumer band 95–148.5 kHz; operating ranges per side are sub‑ranges of these bands.
- Impedance and transfer function: measurement definitions and required test methods; impedance and transfer functions are referenced to the filter mains power ports. The impedance curve must not display resonances with Q > 6 when the opposite side mains ports are open or shorted.
- Nominal ratings:
- Nominal voltages: 230 V (single phase) and 400 V (three phase).
- Nominal currents: selectable values (1, 3, 6, 10, 16, 20, 25, 32, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100, 125 A).
- Performance limits:
- Leakage current: max 3.5 mA per pole for Class I filters at 50 Hz (test circuit defined with a 2 000 Ω ±100 Ω source resistance and instrument accuracy class ≥5).
- Voltage drop (50 Hz): modulus ≤ 1 V rms at nominal current.
- Power dissipation: for DIN distribution‑board filters ≤ 7 W per 18 mm width at nominal current (other types: see product‑specific parts).
- Marking and documentation: manufacturers must supply installation diagrams, operating frequency/attenuation/impedance, ambient/electrical conditions, derating curves and safety precautions in the instruction sheet.
- Test methods: defined measuring setups for open‑circuit, short‑circuit, loaded and nominal‑current measurements; transfer function calculated as 20·log10(Vo/Vi).
Applications and users
- Designed for utilities, manufacturers and integrators of mains communication systems, distribution automation, smart‑metering infrastructure and HBES where signal containment, impedance definition and isolation between network segments are needed.
- Useful for component designers of incoming, segmentation, impedance and phase‑coupler filters, test laboratories and compliance engineers specifying decoupling filters for low‑voltage mains networks.
