Overview

The EN IEC 61643-11:2025/A11:2025 standard specifies requirements and test methods for low-voltage surge protective devices (SPDs) connected to AC low-voltage power systems. Developed by CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization), this amendment updates and refines the existing EN IEC 61643-11:2025 standard to ensure enhanced safety, reliability, and performance of SPDs in electrical installations across Europe.

Surge protective devices are critical components designed to protect electrical systems and equipment from transient overvoltages caused by lightning strikes, switching operations, or faults in power distribution systems. This standard defines the technical criteria for the design, testing, and performance evaluation of SPDs used in low-voltage AC power networks.

Key Topics

  • Scope Modifications
The scope of the standard has been adjusted for clarity, with previous exceptions based on risk assessments for specific power applications removed. This ensures all SPDs adhere uniformly to the updated requirements.

  • Test Procedures and Voltage Values
Amendments include the deletion of certain test voltage tables specific to distribution configurations (e.g., three-phase delta systems, Japanese systems), streamlining the testing framework. The test procedure revisions remove ambiguous allowances for alternative test setups, enforcing stricter consistency in SPD evaluation.

  • Temporary Overvoltages (TOVs)
Changes related to TOVs caused by faults in low voltage systems focus on refining test conditions and removing explanatory notes that could lead to inconsistent interpretations.

  • Normative References
The amendment aligns the standard with international publications like IEC 60947-1 and IEC 61643-01, ensuring cohesive integration with related electrical safety standards and harmonization across European regulations.

  • Compliance with EU Directives
EN IEC 61643-11:2025/A11:2025 fulfills the safety objectives of the European Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU, enabling manufacturers to demonstrate conformity and CE marking for electrical equipment with surge protection.

Applications

This standard applies to the design, manufacture, and testing of surge protective devices in:

  • Residential and commercial low-voltage AC power systems
Protecting homes, offices, and industrial premises from transient voltage surges to safeguard electrical installations and sensitive equipment.

  • Electrical substations and distribution networks
Ensuring surge arresters and protection devices perform reliably under varying network conditions to maintain power quality and safety.

  • Electrical switchgear and controlgear assemblies
Integrating SPDs compliant with this standard into switchboards and control panels to mitigate damage from transient overvoltages.

  • Renewable energy systems and low-voltage installations
Protecting inverter outputs and associated low-voltage circuits connected to alternating current (AC) networks.

Implementing devices in accordance with EN IEC 61643-11:2025/A11 ensures enhanced durability, reliability, and compliance with essential safety and performance requirements, minimizing downtime and costly equipment failures due to electrical surges.

Related Standards

EN IEC 61643-11:2025/A11 closely relates to several key international and European standards, including:

  • EN IEC 61643-01:2025 – General requirements and test methods for low-voltage surge protective devices, providing foundational definitions and classifications.

  • IEC 60947-1 – Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear – General rules, relevant for the integration of SPDs into switchgear.

  • IEC 60364-4-44 – Low-voltage electrical installations – Protection against voltage disturbances and electromagnetic disturbances.

These related standards complement EN IEC 61643-11 by covering broader aspects of electrical safety, installation practices, and device interoperability.

Summary

EN IEC 61643-11:2025/A11:2025 defines stringent requirements and test methods for surge protective devices used in AC low-voltage power systems, ensuring consistent protection against transient overvoltages. This amendment advances the harmonization of European electrical safety standards, aligning with EU directives and reflecting current technical advancements. Professionals designing and implementing electrical protection systems will benefit from adhering to this updated standard to guarantee safety, compliance, and enhanced surge resilience in low-voltage installations.
