Overview

EN IEC 61643-01:2025/A11:2025 is an amendment to the European standard for low-voltage surge protective devices (SPDs). Prepared by CLC/TC 37A and approved by CENELEC, A11 clarifies normative references, refines factory test requirements, and introduces guidance on vibration and shock testing for transport and special applications. Key implementation dates and the relationship with EU legislation are part of the published amendment.

Key Topics

  • Scope of the amendment: Modifies normative references, updates routine test wording and preconditioning procedures, and adds Annex ZB on vibration and shock tests.
  • Vibration and shock guidance: Annex ZB recommends performing sinusoidal, broadband random vibration and shock tests in accordance with EN 60068-2-6, EN 60068-2-64 and EN 60068-2-27. Typical mechanical stress levels referenced from EN 60721 series and application-specific standards (e.g., EN 61373 for railway) are noted.
  • Routine and production testing: The revised A.1 emphasizes that appropriate test(s) shall be performed during manufacturing to verify that an SPD meets its declared performance.
  • Preconditioning and sample handling: The preconditioning note clarifies that sample modification after preconditioning is carried out by the manufacturer under test-laboratory supervision to avoid unintended damage.
  • Document edits: Table 16 no longer includes an American Wire Gauge (AWG) column; several normative references (IEC, ISO) are added or updated.
  • Pass criteria: Annex ZB refers to pass criteria C, D, E, G and I (Table 3) for vibration/shock evaluation as applicable.

Applications

This amendment has practical value for manufacturers, test laboratories, system integrators and specifiers involved with SPDs in:

  • Commercial and industrial electrical installations where transportation and mechanical stress are expected.
  • Transport and railway applications that require tailored vibration and shock qualification (see EN 61373).
  • Product conformity and regulatory pathways tied to the Low Voltage Directive and national adoption by CENELEC members.

Benefits include:

  • Improved product reliability through defined mechanical stress testing.
  • Clearer factory test expectations to support consistent production quality control.
  • Enhanced market compliance and safer deployment in mechanically demanding environments.

Related Standards

Key referenced standards and guidance cited in the amendment include:

  • EN IEC 61643-01:2025 (base standard)
  • EN 60068-2-6, EN 60068-2-64, EN 60068-2-27 (vibration and shock tests)
  • EN 60721 series (environmental classification / typical parameters)
  • EN 61373 (railway vibration and shock requirements)
  • IEC 60364-5-53, ISO 4892-1 / ISO 4892-2, ISO 4628-3 (normative references added)

For implementation and national status, consult the CENELEC member body or the CEN-CENELEC Management Centre. For product testing, coordinate with accredited test laboratories to apply the amended clauses and Annex ZB where vibration and shock performance is declared.
