Overview

EN IEC 61442:2024/prA1:2026 is an amendment to the international standard for test methods related to accessories for power cables with rated voltages from 6 kV (Um = 7.2 kV) up to 30 kV (Um = 36 kV). Published under the auspices of CLC, this amendment focuses on refining and updating testing procedures to ensure safety, reliability, and quality in medium-voltage cable systems. The standard is crucial for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and utilities involved in electricity transmission and distribution, as it supports the performance verification of joints, terminations, and connectors used in a variety of cable installations.

Key Topics

  • Test Methods at Elevated Temperature: Improved guidance is provided regarding the application of heating current and voltage during tests, ensuring consistent and reliable conditions for assessing accessory performance.
  • Setup and Connection Requirements: Specific criteria for the arrangement and electrical connections during testing, including:
    • Adapting setups for single-core and three-core cables.
    • Use of single-phase vs. three-phase heating and voltage depending on cable and accessory type.
  • Test Arrangements by Cable Types: Introduction of a new table (Table 9.1) that clarifies appropriate heating current and voltage combinations for different cable constructions, such as belted, non-armoured, and armoured cables.
  • Accessory Types Covered: Testing procedures are detailed for:
    • Cable terminations
    • Separable connectors (including deadbreak types)
    • Straight, branch, and loop joints
    • Stop ends
  • Magnetic Coverings & Armour: Special consideration for cables with ferromagnetic armouring which require distinct test currents.
  • International Conformance: Alignment with global IEC methodologies to promote consistency and interoperability across regions.

Applications

The updated test methods and clarifications brought by EN IEC 61442:2024/prA1:2026 are widely applicable throughout the power industry, particularly in areas involving medium-voltage systems. Key benefits and uses include:

  • Quality Assurance for Manufacturers: Ensures that cable accessories meet stringent international standards, reducing the risk of in-service failure due to inadequate testing.
  • Safer Power Transmission and Distribution: By rigorously assessing jointing and terminating components, utilities can minimize the risks of outages and enhance energy efficiency.
  • Type and Routine Testing in Laboratories: Accredited testing organizations can utilize these unified procedures to provide recognized certification for cable accessories.
  • Standardization Across Projects: Engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractors can specify compliance with EN IEC 61442 and its amendment to ensure compatibility and safety in large infrastructure developments.
  • Facilitating Innovation: Updated and clearly-defined test methods support the integration of new materials and designs into power cable accessories.

Related Standards

For comprehensive compliance and improved understanding of cable accessory testing, the following standards are closely associated:

  • EN IEC 61442: The main standard detailing test methods for power cable accessories.
  • IEC 60502 Series: Covers power cables with extruded insulation and their accessories for rated voltages.
  • IEC 60840: Test and qualification standards for high-voltage cables and joints above 30 kV.
  • IEC 60270: Partial discharge measurement technique standard, relevant for insulation integrity tests.
  • IEC 61238-1: Compression and mechanical test methods for connectors.

Using the stability provided by these standards, manufacturers, utilities, and testing bodies can ensure the reliability and safety of medium-voltage cable networks, supporting robust infrastructure for electricity transmission and distribution worldwide.

15 FOREWORD
16 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
17 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
18 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
19 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
20 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
21 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
22 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
23 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
24 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
25 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
26 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
27 interested IEC National Committees.
28 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
29 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
30 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
31 misinterpretation by any end user.
32 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
33 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
34 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
