EN 50049-1:1997
(Main)Domestic and similar electronic equipment interconnection requirements: Peritelevision connector
Domestic and similar electronic equipment interconnection requirements: Peritelevision connector
This standard defines the interconnection characteristics of peritelevision devices, both between themselves and with television receivers (monochrome or colour). The interconnections covered by this standard are at basehand (video and audio) or digital signals. For the purpose of defining conformance, this standard specifies the types and related groups of signals, composite video, audio, primary colour and control that shall be present on the connectors. The levels and impedances together with the tolerances on these values are also specified. The manner in which the signals on the connector are processed within the products incorporating the connectors and the presentation of the results of such processing to the user is outside the scope of this standard. These details depend upon the system involved, e.g. PAL or SECAM and the specification of the product. This standard lays down collectively the electrical matching characteristics (type of signals, voltage and impedance values), dimensional mechanical and electrical characteristics of the connectors, type and wiring of interconnection cordsets. Attention is drawn to the fact that the interconnection covered by this standard shall in any circumstances meet the safety requirements specified in EN 60065:1993 and the electromagnetic compatibility requirements specified in the appropriate publications

Overview
EN 50049-1:1997 (CLC) specifies interconnection requirements for the Peritelevision connector used with domestic and similar electronic equipment. The standard defines the electrical, mechanical and wiring characteristics required for reliable audio–video interconnection between peritelevision devices and television receivers (monochrome or colour). It covers baseband (video and audio) and digital signals and sets the signal types and groups that must be present on the connectors.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Signal types and groups: Defines required groups such as composite video, audio, primary colour and control signals that shall be present on peritelevision connectors.
- Electrical characteristics: Specifies signal levels, impedances and the tolerances for those values (for conformance testing).
- Mechanical and dimensional characteristics: Lays down connector form‑factor, mechanical mating details and contact assignments to ensure interchangeability.
- Cordset wiring: Defines recommended types and wiring of interconnection cordsets (cables and plugs) for consistent connectivity.
- Scope exclusions: Does not specify internal signal processing or user presentation methods inside equipment (these depend on system standards such as PAL or SECAM and product specifications).
- Safety and EMC compliance: Interconnections must meet the safety requirements of EN 60065:1993 and applicable electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) publications.
Applications
EN 50049-1:1997 is aimed at ensuring interoperable, safe and high‑quality audio/video connections in consumer electronics. Common practical uses include:
- Designing and producing TV sets, set‑top boxes, video recorders, DVD/Blu‑ray players and similar peritelevision devices.
- Specifying and manufacturing peritelevision connectors and compatible cable assemblies (cordsets).
- Performing conformance testing and quality assurance for audio/video interconnection.
- Ensuring product compliance with safety and EMC standards during device development and certification.
Who uses this standard
- Consumer electronics manufacturers and product designers
- Connector and cable manufacturers
- Compliance engineers and test laboratories
- Installers, service technicians and product integrators focused on AV interoperability
