Part 1 : General requirements and measuring methods
FOREWORD
I) The formal decisions or agreements of the f E C on technical matters, prepared by Technical Committees on which all the
National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
2) They have the form of recommendations for international use and they are accepted by the National Committees in that
sense.
3) In order to promote this international unification, the I E C expresses the wish that all National Committees having as
yet no national rules, when preparing such rules, should use the I E C recommendations as the fundamental basis for these
rules in so far as national conditions will permit.
4) The desirability is recognized of extending international agreement on these matters through an endeavour to harmonize
national standardization rules with these recommendations in so far as national conditions will permit. The National
Committees pledge their influence towards that end.
5) The I E C has not laid down any procedure concerning marking as an indication of approval and has no responsibility
when an item of equipment is declared to comply with one of its recommendations.
PREFACE
This Recommendation has been prepared by Sub-Committee 46A, R.F. Cables and their Accessories,
of I E C Technical Committee No. 46, Cables, Wires and Waveguides for Telecommunication Equipment.
It contains Part 1 of the complete Recommendation for general purpose rigid coaxial transmission lines
and their associated flange connectors.
Part 2 will include, in future, the standardized dimensions of rigid coaxial transmission lines and their
associated flange connectors.
A first draft was discussed at the meeting held in London in 1968, as a result of which a revised draft was
submitted to the National Committees for approval under the Six Months' Rule in January 1969.

Part 1 :
General requirements and measuring methods
This Recommendation shall be used in conjunction with:
I E C Publication 68, Basic Environmental Testing Procedures.
ISO Recommendation R286.
1. Scope
This Recommendation relates to gas-filled rigid coaxial transmission lines and their associated
flange connectors.
It primarily covers requirements for flange connectors mounted on rigid coaxial transmission
lines and gives partial data for unmounted flange connectors.
2. Object
The aim of this Recommendation is to specify the following for rigid coaxial transmission lines
and their associated flange connectors:
a)
The recommendations necessary to ensure compatibility and, as far as essential, inter-
changeability.
b) The tolerances necessary to ensure adequate electrical performance.
c) The test methods.
SECTION ONE — GENERAL
3. Terminology
3.1 Technical terms
The following definitions shall apply for the purposes of this Recommendation.
3.1.1 Size
The size of a rigid coaxial transmission line is defined as the rounded-off outside diameter of the
line, expressed in millimetres.
3.1.2 Wall thickness
The nominal wall thickness is defined as half the difference between nominal outside and inside
dimensions, expressed in millimetres.

3.1.3 Ellipticity
The ellipticity E is defined as:

3.1.4 Curvature
Curvature is defined as the maximum deviation of the actual axis of the transmission line from a
straight line of specified length connecting two points on that axis.
3.1.5 Attenuation
Attenuation per unit of length is defined as the logarithmic decrement in transmitted power.
3.1.6 Flange connector
An assembly consisting of a two-way inner connector and an outer conductor flange.
3.1.7 Inner connector
A component, normally incorporating resilient members on both ends and a dielectric anchoring
member, for connecting together two tubular rigid inner conductors.
3.1.8 Outer conductor flange
A component normally attached to a rigid outer conductor and used to connect another flange,
mounted on another rigid outer conductor.
3.1.9
Mated connector set
The means for connecting together two lengths of rigid transmission line, consisting of one inner
connector and two outer conductor flanges.
3.1.10 Pressurization
Pressurization is the application of a positive pressure, relative to the atmospheric pressure, of
dry gas to the interior of a coaxial line and connector assembly; this is generally used to prevent
the entrance of moisture or other foreign material. High pressurization may be applied to improve
electrical performance.
3.1.11 Reflection coefficient and voltage standing wave ratio (v.s.w.r.)
Where the terms reflection coefficient or voltage standing wave ratio are used in this Recommenda-
tion, they refer to the properties measured on assemblies of rigid transmission lines.

For the relation between the reflection coefficient and v.s.w.r., the following equation is applicable:

3.1.12 Power and voltage ratings
The power rating or voltage rating of a line and connectors is that value of transmitted power or
voltage which permits satisfactory operation of the line assembly and provides an adequate safety
factor below the point where damage or appreciably shortened life will occur.
3.2 Definitions relating to testing procedures
3.2.1 Type
A type comprises products having similar design features, manufactured by the same techniques,
and falling within the manufacturer's usual range of ratings for these products.
Notes 1.—
Mounting accessories are ignored, provided they have no significant effect on the test results.
2. — Ratings cover the combination of :
a) electrical ratings;
b) sizes;
c) environmental group.
3. — The limits of the range of ratings shall be agreed between customer and manufacturer.
3.2.2 Type test
The type test of a product is the complete series of tests to be carried out on a number of specimens
representative of the type, with the object of determining whether a particular manufacturer can be
considered to be able to produce products meeting the specification.
3.2.3
Type approval")
Type approval is the decision by the proper authority (the customer himself or his nominee)
that a particular manufacturer can be considered to be able to produce in reasonable quantities
the type meeting the specification.
3.2.4 Acceptance
tests ")
Acceptance tests are tests carried out to determine the acceptability of a consignment on the basis
of an agreement between customer and manufacturer.
The agreement shall cover:
a) the sample size;
b) the selection of tests;
c) the extent to which the test specimens shall conform to the requirements for the selected tests
of the specification.
Note. —
In cases of divergent test results, the I E C standard test methods shall be used for acceptance tests.
3.2.5
Factory tests ")
Factory tests are those tests carried out by the manufacturer to verify that his products meet the
specification.

4. Type designation
General purpose rigid coaxial transmission lines according to this Recommendation shall be desig-

nated by:
a) the reference to this Recommendation: 339-1 IEC;
b) a number denoting the characteristic impedance, in ohms;
c) a hyphen;
a number denoting the rounded-off outside diameter, in millimetres, of the transmission line;
d)
e) a hyphen;
f) a serial number.
For a transmission line of given outside diameter, the serial number shall be "1".
Note. —
Example : 339-1 IEC 50-155-1, denotes a rigid coaxial transmission line, having a characteristic impedance
of 50 SZ and a rounded-off diameter of 155 mm.
4.2 Flange connectors according to this Recommendation shall be designated by:
a) the reference to this Recommendation: 339-1 IEC;
b) a number denoting the characteristic impedance of the transmission line, in ohms;
c) a hyphen;
d) a number denoting the rounded-off outside diameter, in millimetres, of the transmission line;
e) a hyphen;
f) a serial number.
Note. — For a flange connector for a transmission line, the serial number shall be:

3 — for a swivel type flange connector.

Standard atmospheric conditions for testing
5.
5.1 Unless otherwise specified, all tests shall be carried out under standard atmospheric conditions for
testing as specified in I E C Publication 68.
5.2 Before the measurements are made, the specimen shall be stored at the measuring temperature for a
time sufficient to allow the entire assembly to reach this temperature.
5.3 When measurements are made at a temperature other than the specified temperature, the results
shall, when necessary, be corrected to the specified temperature. The ambient temperature at which
the measurements are made shall be stated in the test report.
6. Visual inspection
6.1 The transmission lines shall be uniform in composition and in wall thickness and shall be straight
and smooth from end to end. There shall be no burrs, cracks, die marks, chatter marks, dirt, grease
or other irregularities of the surface.
Both inner and outer surface shall have a clean bright appearance in accordance with good current
practice.

6.2 The mated connector set shall be uniform in composition. There shall be no burrs, cracks, die marks,
grease, scale or splinters.
Contact surfaces shall have a clean appearance in accordance with good current practice.
Note. — Coloured coatings used to reduce sliding friction, such as molybdenumdisulfide, are permitted.
Compliance is checked by visual inspection.
7. Marking
7.1 Each length of line shall be clearly and indelibly marked with the name or symbol of the manufac-
turer and the type number.
7.2 When space permits, each flange connector shall have the following information clearly and indelibly
marked upon it:
a) I E C type designation;
b) mark of origin (manufacturer's name or trade mark).
7.3 In addition, these indications shall be marked on the packages.
SECTION TWO — MECHANICAL REQUIREMENTS
8. General requirements
8.1 Materials
In this Recommendation, no recommendations are made for the materials to be used either for
transmission lines or for flange connectors. The choice of materials to be used must be agreed
upon between customer and manufacturer.
8.2 Dimensions
The dimensions of the transmission lines and the tolerances thereon shall be in accordance with
the values given in the detail specifications. Dimensions and tolerances shall be given both in milli-
metres and inches.
Unless otherwise specified, the following dimensions for the transmission lines shall be given in
the detail specifications:
a) nominal outside diameter of outer conductor;
b) deviation on outside diameter of outer conductor;
c) nominal inside diameter of outer conductor;
deviation on inside diameter of outer conductor;
d)
e) nominal wall thickness;
f) nominal outside diameter of inner cond
