Overview
EN 50290-2-26:2002/A1:2007 (CENELEC/CLC) specifies common design rules and construction requirements for halogen-free flame retardant insulation compounds used in communication cables. This 2007 amendment (A1) updates EN 50290-2-26:2002 and introduces a new halogen-free insulation grade for higher-temperature service. The standard defines test methods, performance grades and acceptance criteria to support safer cable systems with reduced corrosivity and smoke emissions.
Key Topics
- Scope and purpose: Common design rules for halogen-free, flame-retardant insulation compounds for communication and coaxial cables.
- New high-temperature grade: Amendment A1 adds a halogen-free compound grade intended for elevated operating temperatures.
- Test methods referenced: EN 60811 series for mechanical and ageing tests, EN 60811-3-1 for pressure/heat tests, IEC 60754-2 for corrosivity, and IEC 60250 for dielectric measurements where required.
- Defined grades and key characteristics:
- Grades covered include cross-linked insulation and two thermoplastic insulation types.
- Maximum rated temperature at cable: cross-linked 90 °C, thermoplastic (grade 1) 70 °C, thermoplastic (grade 2) 90 °C.
- Mechanical properties in delivery: tensile strength (median, min) typically around 10 MPa for cross-linked and 9 MPa for thermoplastics; elongation at break (median, min) typically 125%.
- Ageing: specified ageing conditions (e.g., 7 × 24 h at defined temperatures) with limits on variation of tensile strength and elongation.
- Fire-related indicators: oxygen index as a guidance parameter; corrosivity requirements per IEC 60754-2; smoke opacity and toxicity are addressed (with smoke and toxicity under consideration or referenced to IEC guidance where applicable).
Note: The standard provides tables of characteristic limits and precise test conditions; users should consult the official document for full numerical requirements and test procedures.
Applications
This part of EN 50290 is intended for use by:
- Cable designers and material suppliers selecting halogen-free, flame-retardant insulation compounds.
- Manufacturers of communication and coaxial cables requiring standardised mechanical, thermal and fire-performance properties.
- Specifiers focused on reduced post-fire corrosivity and smoke for installations in buildings, transport and critical infrastructure.
Practical benefits include improved fire performance, lower corrosive acidic by-products if combustion occurs, and harmonised acceptance criteria that ease material qualification and quality control.

- EN/IEC 60811 (test methods for cables)
- IEC 60754-2 (test for corrosivity of combustion gases)
- IEC 60250 (dielectric constant and dissipation factor measurements)
