EN IEC 62196-3 is the CENELEC standard for the dimensional compatibility of DC and AC/DC pin and contact-tube vehicle couplers used in conductive charging of electric vehicles. It is aimed at manufacturers of vehicle connectors, vehicle inlets, cable assemblies and charging equipment, and it tells them which interface configurations, contact functions, dimensions and tests to use so mating parts fit and work together in practice. The document also includes a thermal-management annex for DC couplers and cable assemblies that use thermal sensing, or thermal transport and thermal sensing.
What does EN IEC 62196-3 specify?
EN IEC 62196-3 specifies vehicle-side couplers with standardized pin and contact-tube configurations for conductive charging systems with control means. It covers high power DC interfaces and combined AC/DC interfaces, and it is intended to be read together with the general requirements in IEC 62196-1.
The document is organized around general clauses on scope, references, definitions, construction and tests, followed by standard sheets for the defined configurations. It also adds normative and informative annexes for gauges, PCB-connected accessories, and thermal-management applications.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex AAA | Standard sheets for test gauges used in 14.1.9 |
| Annex BBB | EV accessories directly connected to printed circuit boards (PCBs) |
| Annex CCC | Vehicle connector, vehicle inlet and cable assembly for DC charging intended to be used with a thermal management system |
| Annex DDD | Interlock function example with retaining means and latching device |
What are the key requirements of EN IEC 62196-3?
EN IEC 62196-3 sets the interface layouts, safety sequence, construction rules and test program that make the couplers interoperable and safe in use. The main practical point is that a design is not just a connector shape - it is a defined configuration with matching contact functions, dimensions and verification tests.
Interface selection and compatibility
- Clause 6 defines a DC interface and a combined AC/DC interface, with fixed contact roles for power, signal, protective earth and auxiliary functions. In practice, manufacturers must choose a configuration and keep the contact assignment consistent across the mating pair.
- Clause 7 classifies accessories as vehicle connectors or vehicle inlets, and also by interface and by the standard sheets used. This matters because a product declaration has to match the exact configuration family it was built for.
- Clause 9 requires the vehicle connector and vehicle inlet to comply with the relevant configuration shown in the standard sheets. That is the dimensional compatibility gate - if the geometry does not match, the parts are not interchangeable as intended.
- Table 303 ties each configuration to the relevant DC charging system annexes. In practice, this is the link between the connector hardware and the charging system architecture it is meant to serve.
Electrical safety, earthing and interlocking
- Clause 10 sets the contact sequence during connection and disconnection for DC interfaces. The protective earth connection must be established before power contacts and released after them, while signal contacts follow a defined order. This sequencing reduces the risk of live exposure or incorrect energization.
- Clause 11 covers the size and colour of protective earthing conductors, and for the DC portion it points to calculation by the I t methodology or to the associated charging-system requirements. For designers, this affects cable cross-section selection and the safety case for the earthing path.
- Clause 12 applies earthing provisions to non-isolated systems and excludes them for isolated systems. That means the earthing concept must be matched to the charging architecture, not treated as universal.
- Clause 14 addresses interlocks, and Annex DDD gives an example of retaining means and latching behavior. In practice, the connector has to confirm secure engagement before charging can proceed and has to remain safe during withdrawal.
Construction, marking and performance checks
- Clause 8 requires marking, and the document later checks the durability of marking in the test overview of Annex CCC. That matters because identification has to remain readable after use and handling.
- Clauses 15 to 19 cover material ageing, general construction, construction of plugs and vehicle connectors, and construction of vehicle inlets. These clauses shape the mechanical and material build of the hardware, including how parts are retained and how interfaces are arranged.
- Clauses 20 to 30 cover degrees of protection, insulation resistance, dielectric strength, breaking capacity, normal operation, temperature rise, mechanical strength, screws and connections, creepage distances and clearances, heat and fire resistance, and corrosion. Together they define the product’s electrical and environmental robustness under service conditions.
- Clauses 31, 32, 33, 34 and 36 cover conditional short-circuit current withstand, electromagnetic compatibility, vehicle driveover, thermal cycling and misalignment. These checks matter for real vehicles because the connector must survive installation, parking loads, repeated use and off-axis mating.
Thermal management and high-current DC applications
- Annex CCC is the dedicated normative annex for DC charging accessories that use thermal sensing, or thermal transport and thermal sensing. It adds a full set of requirements for these higher-stress applications.
- Annex CCC requires a manufacturer data sheet and groups the verification into test sequences A to D. That means the thermal-managed product is not accepted by geometry alone - it also needs declared operating data and a defined test plan.
- Annex CCC requires thermal sensing to report the temperature of the DC contacts, and in the relevant configurations the DC+ and DC− contacts are monitored independently. In practice, the charging system can use that information to manage current before the contacts overheat.
- Annex CCC also covers loss of thermal transport, operation conditions for the thermal management system, minimum conductor cross-section, contact temperature, and liquid coolants. For buyers and integrators, this is the part to check when selecting cable assemblies or inlets for very high current DC charging.
What terms does EN IEC 62196-3 define?
- vehicle coupler - The mating vehicle connector and vehicle inlet arrangement used for conductive charging.
- vehicle connector - The cable-end part of the coupler that mates with the vehicle inlet.
- vehicle inlet - The vehicle-mounted part that receives the connector during charging.
- control pilot (CP) - The control contact used for charging control and signalling.
- protective earth (PE) - The safety earthing connection used to bond accessible metal parts or the earthing path.
- proximity detection or connection switch (PP or CS) - The contact used to detect connection status or connector presence.
- thermal sensing - The function that measures contact temperature and sends that information to the charging system or vehicle.
- thermal transport - The function that moves heat away from the DC contacts, typically with a cooling medium.
Who uses EN IEC 62196-3?
EN IEC 62196-3 is used by connector manufacturers, cable assembly manufacturers, vehicle manufacturers, charging equipment manufacturers and test laboratories. Quality and compliance teams use it to check dimensional compatibility, contact sequencing, earthing, marking and environmental performance. Buyers and engineers use it when they need to match a vehicle inlet to a connector family or verify that a proposed charging interface belongs to the right configuration.
What changed in EN IEC 62196-3 from the previous edition?
EN IEC 62196-3 states that it cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2022. The edition is described as a technical revision.
The stated changes are:
- the content of IEC TS 62196-3-1 has been integrated into the document as a normative annex
- ratings have been increased for all configurations

183 FOREWORD
184 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
185 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
186 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
187 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
188 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
189 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
190 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
191 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
192 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
193 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
194 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
195 interested IEC National Committees.
196 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
197 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
198 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
199 misinterpretation by any end user.
200 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
201 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
202 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
203 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
204 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
205 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
206 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
207 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
208 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
209 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
210 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
211 Publications.
212 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
213 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
214 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
215 rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
