Overview

EN IEC 63044-5-1:2019 is a product-family European adoption of IEC 63044-5-1:2017 that defines EMC requirements, test conditions and test set‑ups for Home and Building Electronic Systems (HBES) and Building Automation and Control Systems (BACS). It establishes the minimum electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) performance for an HBES/BACS network (in addition to individual device EMC standards) and covers devices and interfaces used within a dedicated HBES/BACS network when no specific product EMC standard exists. It does not apply to interfaces to other networks (for example dedicated ICT networks covered by CISPR standards).

Key Topics

  • Scope and applicability: Network-level EMC requirements for operator stations, human–system interfaces, management devices, control and application-specific controllers, field devices, cabling and interconnections used in HBES/BACS.
  • Performance criteria: The standard specifies general performance criteria (noted as criteria A, B and C) to classify acceptable behaviour during and after EMC disturbances.
  • Standard test conditions and set-ups: Provides standardized test set-ups (see Annex B) to ensure repeatable EMC immunity and emission testing of HBES/BACS equipment and networks.
  • Immunity tests covered:
    • Electrostatic discharge (ESD)
    • Radiated RF field immunity
    • Electrical fast transients (burst)
    • Surge immunity
    • Conducted RF (RF voltage) immunity
    • Power frequency magnetic field immunity
    • Voltage dips, short interruptions and variations
  • Emission requirements:
    • Conducted emissions
    • Radiated emissions
    • Low-frequency emissions
  • Normative references: Relies on IEC/EN EMC test standards (IEC 61000 series) and relevant HBES/BACS parts (e.g., IEC 63044‑1, IEC 63044‑3).

Applications

EN IEC 63044-5-1:2019 is used by:

  • Device manufacturers designing HBES/BACS equipment to ensure network-level EMC compatibility.
  • Test laboratories and compliance engineers performing immunity and emission testing and preparing test reports.
  • System integrators and installers to specify equipment and cabling that meet network EMC requirements.
  • Specification writers and procurement teams preparing compliance requirements for building automation projects.
  • Certification bodies assessing conformity of HBES/BACS solutions when a device‑specific EMC standard is absent.

Using this standard helps reduce interference risks, improve reliability of building automation functions (lighting, HVAC, security, etc.), and streamline regulatory and market acceptance in CENELEC/IEC jurisdictions.
