Overview
EN IEC 63563-2:2025 - Qi Specification version 2.0, Part 2: Glossary - is the authoritative glossary that standardizes definitions, acronyms and symbols used across the Qi v2.0 wireless charging specification. It covers terminology for flat-surface wireless power systems (typical applications: mobile phones, tablets) designed to transfer up to 15 W. The glossary is drawn from the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) Qi Specification v2.0 (April 2023) and is provided to ensure consistent interpretation across manufacturers, test labs and standards bodies.
Key topics
The standard organizes and defines technical vocabulary and notation critical for interoperable wireless charging systems, including:
- Power system terms: Power Transmitter, Power Receiver, Power Signal, Active Area, Air Gap, Operating Volume, Primary/Secondary Coil, Transmitted/Received Power.
- Power profiles & control: Power Profile, Baseline/Extended Protocol, Operating Point, Guaranteed/Negotiable/Potential Load Power.
- Safety & detection: Foreign Object, Foreign Object Detection (FOD), Friendly Metal, Shielding - terms used in thermal and safety evaluations.
- Security & identity: Authentication, Certificate, Certificate Authority (CA), Certificate Chain, Revocation, WPID, Manufacturer CA and Product Unit Certificate definitions for secure device identity and over-the-air validation.
- Communications & test: Communications and Control Unit (CCU), Data Stream Initiator/Responder, Analog/Digital Ping, Test Power Transmitter/Receiver.
- Acronyms and symbols: Comprehensive acronym list (e.g., FOD, EAL, BPP/EPP) and symbol conventions (uppercase = RMS/average, lowercase = peak, prime notation for position-dependent quantities, and definitions of frequency/inductance/power symbols).
Applications and who uses it
EN IEC 63563-2:2025 is essential for:
- Product designers and OEMs developing Qi-compliant chargers and receiver devices (phones, tablets, accessories).
- Firmware and hardware engineers implementing communications, power-management and safety features.
- Test labs and certification bodies performing interoperability, EMC, safety and FOD testing.
- Standards committees and technical writers ensuring consistent terminology across specification documents, datasheets and regulatory filings.
- Security and compliance teams managing certificate chains, device identity (WPID) and revocation processes.
Using a common glossary improves interoperability, reduces ambiguities in technical requirements, and supports reliable, safe wireless charging implementations.

FOREWORD
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprisingall
national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote internationalco-
operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end andin addition
to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, TechnicalReports, Publicly
Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Theirpreparation is entrusted to
technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt withmay participate in this
preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizationsliaising with the IEC also
participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the InternationalOrganization for Standardization
(ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the twoorganizations.
The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence betweenany IEC
Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage orother
damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) andexpenses
arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IECPublications.
Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
IEC draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). IEC takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent rights inrespect
thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, IEC Kad notreceived notice of (a) patent(s),which may be
required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that this may notrepresent the latest
information, which may be obtained from the patent database available athttps://patents.iec.ch. IEC shall
not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
