Overview
EN 62612:2013/A1:2017 (identical to IEC 62612:2013/A1:2015) specifies performance requirements for self‑ballasted LED lamps for general lighting services with supply voltages > 50 V. Published by CENELEC as a European amendment, this standard updates EN 62612:2013 and clarifies expected operating and test conditions, stabilization procedures and preferred luminous flux categories. It is intended to support conformity assessment and harmonize performance claims for LED lamps used in general lighting.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and expected operation: Lamps complying with the standard are expected to start and operate satisfactorily at 92% to 106% of rated supply voltage, at ambient temperatures between –20 °C and 40 °C, and when installed in luminaires that comply with IEC 60598‑1.
- Claims for other conditions: If a supplier claims suitability outside these conditions (e.g., higher voltage, temperature or humidity), the lamps must be tested under those claimed conditions, operate satisfactorily, and meet the supplier’s performance claims.
- Luminous flux categories: For non‑directional LED lamps, the standard recommends preferred rated luminous flux values: 100 lm, 150 lm, 250 lm, 350 lm, 500 lm, 800 lm, 1000 lm, 1500 lm, 2000 lm, 3000 lm - facilitating consistent product categorization and labeling.
- Stabilization and measurement procedure (A.1):
- During stabilization, measure luminous flux/intensity and electrical power at least every 1 minute.
- An LED lamp shall be operated at least 30 minutes and is considered stable if, over the last 15 minutes, the relative difference between maximum and minimum readings of light output and electrical power is less than 0.5% of the minimum reading.
- Pre‑burning (prior operation) can be used to reduce stabilization time; pre‑burned lamps meeting the 15‑minute criterion do not require the full 30‑minute run.
- If large fluctuations persist beyond 45 minutes, measurements may start and fluctuations must be reported; however, if a slow downward drift continues, wait until stabilization criteria are met.
- Bibliography: Adds reference to JIS C 8158:2012 (self‑ballasted LED lamps by voltage > 50 V).
Applications and users
This standard is used by:
- LED lamp manufacturers for product design, testing and performance claims
- Testing laboratories and certification bodies performing compliance testing
- Lighting specifiers, procurement teams and OEMs requiring verified lamp performance
