Overview
EN 60068-2-43:2003 (Environmental testing - Part 2-43: Test Kd: Hydrogen sulphide test for contacts and connections) is the CENELEC/CLC adoption of IEC 60068-2-43. It defines an accelerated test method to assess the tarnishing of silver and silver‑alloy contacts and connections when exposed to hydrogen sulphide (H2S). The standard is intended primarily for comparative evaluation of contact performance and is not a general-purpose corrosion test for industrial atmospheres.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Purpose: Evaluate influence of H2S-containing atmospheres on contact properties of silver, silver alloys, silver-plated or silver‑protected surfaces, and solderless connections.
- Primary performance criterion: Change in contact resistance before and after exposure, measured in accordance with IEC 60512-2-1 (millivolt-level method).
- Test atmosphere: Hydrogen sulphide at the concentration quoted in the standard (expressed in the document as 10 × 10^-6 to 15 × 10^-6 vol/vol), with:
- Temperature: 25 °C ± 2 °C
- Relative humidity: Nominal 75 % (must remain between 70 % and 80 %)
- Exposure durations: Typically 4, 10 or 21 days, as specified by the relevant detail specification.
- Test chamber and airflow: Non-reactive materials; atmosphere exchange of at least 3 but not more than 5 changes per hour; specimens must be moved or gently stirred to give a relative velocity of 20–60 m/h (≈6–17 mm/s).
- Specimen handling: No cleaning unless required; contacts may be exposed mated or unmated; measurements performed after 1–2 h recovery (up to 24 h if necessary).
- Controls and monitoring: Stable H2S concentration, temperature and humidity throughout the test; visual inspection and mechanical checks as required by detail specifications.
- Annexes: Annex A (informative) describes an example apparatus for atmosphere generation; Annex ZA (normative) links to European implementation.
Applications and who uses it
- Used by connector and contact manufacturers, test laboratories, quality and reliability engineers, and standards bodies to:
- Screen and compare contact materials and platings for susceptibility to H2S‑induced tarnishing.
- Validate contact resistance stability and solderless connection integrity under accelerated sulphide exposure.
- Support specification and qualification of components where silver‑based contacts are employed.
- Note: Because it is an accelerated, comparative test, results should be interpreted with guidance (see IEC 60068-2-46 and IEC 60355) when predicting real-world long‑term behaviour.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the
two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical specifications, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National
Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject
of patent rights. The IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard IEC 60068-2-43 has been prepared by subcommittee 48B: Connectors,
of IEC technical committee 48: Electromechanical components and mechanical structures
for electronic equipment.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition issued in 1976 and constitutes
a technical revision.
