Overview

EN 61784-5-15:2012/A1:2015 (equivalent to IEC 61784-5-15:2010/A1:2015) is a CLC/CENELEC amendment that defines installation profiles for CPF 15 within the IEC 61784 series on industrial communication networks. It updates the Part 5-15 installation guidance to align with the revised IEC 61918:2013 structure and adds normative references and technical details for installation of fieldbuses and Ethernet-based CPF 15 profiles (notably CP 15/1 – MODBUS™-TCP and CP 15/2 – RTPS).

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and conformance
    • Specifies how to state compliance: references to IEC 61784-5-15 with Amendment 1 are required for CP 15/m profiles.
  • Alignment with IEC 61918
    • General replacement of references from IEC 61918:2010 to IEC 61918:2013; many installation requirements from IEC 61918 apply unless specifically modified.
  • Cabling and network characteristics
    • Detailed tables for balanced cabling (Ethernet) and optical fibre characteristics, including modal bandwidth, minimum/maximum link lengths and channel insertion loss/optical power budget for fibre types.
    • Example optical fibre figures included: single-mode silica (max length 14 000 m, power budget ~8.5 dB), multimode silica (max length 2 000 m, power budget ~4.5 dB), POF (max length 50 m, power budget ~14 dB), hard-clad silica (max length 100 m, power budget ~3.0 dB).
  • Connectors and hardware
    • Recommended connector families for balanced cabling (IEC 60603-7 series, IEC 61076 M12 variants with D/X coding) and optical fibre connector mappings (SC, LC, SC-RJ, etc.) in tabular form.
  • Cable routing
    • Clarifies routing requirements outside and between buildings, and references installation effects (connections, splices, bends) on link budgets per IEC 61918 formulas.
  • Normative references
    • Adds IEC 60603-7-3 and IEC 60793-2 (optical fibre product specifications) to the normative bibliography.

Applications and users

Who will use EN 61784-5-15/A1:

  • Automation and control engineers specifying fieldbus/Ethernet installations for process and industrial plants
  • System integrators and installers designing cabling and connectorization for CPF 15 profiles (MODBUS‑TCP, RTPS)
  • Plant architects, procurement teams and vendors creating compliant hardware and installation instructions
  • Test and commissioning personnel validating link budgets, connector types and cable routing

Practical uses:

  • Specifying cable types, maximum link lengths and power budgets for CPF 15 networks
  • Selecting compatible connectors and fibre optic terminations
  • Ensuring installation conformance to European and IEC fieldbus installation practices

Related standards

  • IEC 61918 (Installation of communication networks in industrial premises) - primary installation requirements referenced
  • IEC 60603-7-3 (connectors) and IEC 60793-2 (optical fibre product specifications) - added normative references
