Overview

The EN IEC 61784-5-3:2018/A1:2024 standard, published by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) and aligned with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), addresses the installation of fieldbus networks specifically tailored for the Communication Profile Family (CPF) 3. This amendment (A1) to the original 2018 edition introduces key updates enhancing installation profiles for CPF 3, including novel cabling solutions and connectors, reflecting evolving industrial communication needs.

Key Topics

  • Fieldbus Installation Profiles
The standard defines structured profiles for the installation of industrial communication networks employing CPF 3 fieldbuses. These profiles provide guidance for optimal setup to ensure reliable industrial process measurement, control, and automation.

  • Integration with IEC 61918 Series
EN IEC 61784-5-3:2018/A1:2024 is designed to be applied conjointly with IEC 61918:2018 and its subsequent amendments (A1:2022 and A2:2024), which specify installation practices for communication networks in industrial premises.

  • Updated Cabling Requirements
This amendment incorporates technical changes such as specifications for Robot Cables and updated parameters for copper and optical fiber cables. It provides detailed information about cable characteristics including impedance, shielding, diameter, and attenuation for CPF 3 Ethernet-based connections.

  • New Connector Standards
Significant additions include two new rectangular connectors (8-way and 10-way) and an M8-4 D-coded connector suited for Ethernet communication in industrial environments. These connectors adhere to IEC 61076 series standards, facilitating robust and standardized connections in harsh industrial conditions.

  • Emphasis on Compliance and Conformance
Clear criteria are established for meeting the installation profiles, reinforcing conformance with the updated standard editions (2018 and A1:2024). This helps in maintaining interoperability and reducing installation errors in industrial communication setups.

Applications

  • Industrial Automation Networks
Implementing fieldbus installation profiles from this standard ensures the resilience and efficiency of automation systems used in manufacturing plants, process industries, and transportation sectors.

  • Profinet Systems
The standard provides specific updates for Profinet installations under CPF 3, enhancing Ethernet-based communication reliability with proper cable and connector selections.

  • Robotics Integration
Incorporation of Robot Cable specifications supports dynamic and flexible cabling solutions in automated robotic cells, improving durability and communication fidelity.

  • Process Control Systems
This standard facilitates the secure installation of process measurement and control networks, contributing to streamlined operations and minimized downtime in industrial processes.

  • Network Infrastructure Planning
Enables engineers and installation specialists to design compliant industrial network infrastructures that meet evolving technological and regulatory requirements.

Related Standards

  • IEC 61918 Series
Defines installation of communication networks in industrial premises and is fundamental for the correct application of EN IEC 61784-5-3.

  • IEC 60603-7 Series
Covers detailed connector specifications particularly relevant for new connector types introduced in this amendment.

  • IEC 60793-2-50:2018
Pertains to optical fiber specification, used alongside this standard for optical cabling guidance.

  • IEC 61076 Series
Provides the technical basis for connector types such as M8 D-coded and rectangular connectors now referenced in CPF 3 networks.

Conclusion

EN IEC 61784-5-3:2018/A1:2024 delivers essential improvements to the installation profiles of CPF 3 fieldbuses within industrial communication networks. By integrating updated cabling guidelines and connector standards, it addresses sophisticated industrial communication scenarios, including Profinet and robotic applications. Adherence to this standard ensures optimized network performance, safety, and interoperability, critical for modern industrial automation and process control environments.

AMENDMENT 1
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent c
