Overview

EN 62477-1:2012/A12:2021 (CENELEC amendment A12) is a European safety standard for power electronic converter systems and equipment - Part 1: General. The amendment (approved 2020‑11‑17) updates Annex ZZ (the informative mapping to EU legislation) and enables citation alongside earlier amendment EN 62477-1:2012/A1:2017. This harmonised document supports conformity with the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU) when cited in the Official Journal of the EU and is maintained by CLC/TC 22X “Power electronics”.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and general safety principles for power converters, rectifiers, inverters and stabilized power supplies.
  • Protection against electrical hazards: clauses cover measures to prevent direct and indirect contact, suitable insulation and protection under foreseeable conditions.
  • Thermal, arc and radiation risks: requirements to avoid harmful temperatures, arcs or radiation (note: some radiation and electromagnetic field aspects are covered by separate standards).
  • Mechanical and environmental robustness: guidance on mechanical strength, resistance to non-mechanical influences and overload conditions so persons and property are not endangered.
  • Marking, assembly and connection: requirements for identification, correct assembly and safe connection of equipment and components.
  • Annex ZZ (informative): maps clauses of the standard to the safety objectives of Directive 2014/35/EU, explaining how compliance yields a presumption of conformity within the standard’s scope.
  • Limitations: the standard does not replace EMC and certain ionizing/non‑ionizing radiation standards; users should consult related normative documents.

Applications and who uses it

  • Manufacturers of power electronic converters, UPS systems, inverters, rectifiers and stabilized power supplies use this standard to design for safety and to demonstrate compliance with EU market rules.
  • Design and safety engineers apply the requirements during product development, risk assessment and component selection.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies reference the standard for conformity assessment and CE marking under the Low Voltage Directive.
  • Regulatory and compliance teams use Annex ZZ to justify harmonised-standard conformity in technical files.

Related standards

  • EN 62477-1:2012 (base standard) and earlier amendments (e.g., A1:2017)
  • Separate EMC, electromagnetic field and radiation standards (not covered in detail by EN 62477-1)
  • Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU (Annex ZZ relationship)
