Adhesives for non-structural wood applications - Test method and requirements for resistance to static load
This European Standard specifies a method for determining the ability of a test piece bonded with a thermoplastic adhesive, to support a given load for a specified time without fracture or excessive distortion, and specifies performance requirements for mean survival time.
It should be used in conjunction with EN 204 and EN 205, which describe durability classes and corresponding test methods for non-structural wood adhesives based on their ability to withstand various water treatments and relatively rapidly applied loads. The test described in this standard may be used to assess joints made with thin glue line, as defined in EN 205.
NOTE The test described in this standard is not a mandatory requirement for the classification of adhesives into the classes D1, D2, D3 and D4 given in EN 204. It is an additional test that can be specified by a purchaser if required.

Overview
EN 14256:2007 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies a test method and performance requirements for the resistance to static load of adhesives used in non-structural wood applications. This standard focuses on evaluating how well a timber joint, bonded with a thermoplastic adhesive, can withstand a constant static load for an extended period without failure or excessive deformation. The standard is particularly useful for assessing thin glue line joints as defined in EN 205.
This method provides essential performance data to complement the durability classifications and test methods found in EN 204 and EN 205, which cover adhesive resistance to water treatments and rapidly applied loads. While EN 14256:2007 is not mandatory for classifying adhesives into durability classes D1 through D4, it serves as an additional test that purchasers can specify when higher confidence in static load resistance is required.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose
The standard evaluates the ability of bonded wood test pieces to support a static load of about 30 kg for up to 21 days, tracking joint survival time without fracture or excessive deformation.Test Setup and Conditions
- Use of jigs holding symmetrical single lap joints with overlapping wooden adherents.
- Test pieces conditioned at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % relative humidity to ensure standard environment.
- Continuous shear forcing by suspending weights for up to 21 days.
- Daily inspection to record failure time or survival time for each test specimen.
Sample Preparation
- Test pieces prepared with a thin glue line and specific dimensions, including a 20 mm overlap.
- Adhesive application following manufacturer's instructions or defined parameters: adhesive spread around 150 g/m² per side, open assembly time approximately 120 s, closed assembly time about 180 s, and pressing pressure between 0.7 to 1.0 N/mm² for a minimum of 2 hours.
- Conditioning bonded specimens for 7 to 8 days before testing.
Performance Criteria
The mean survival time of the test pieces must be at least 14 days under the static load to meet the standard’s performance requirements.Reporting Requirements
The test report includes detailed information about the adhesive type, wood species and moisture content, bonding procedure, conditioning method, survival times of specimens, and any deviations from the standard procedures.
Applications
EN 14256:2007 is used extensively by:
- Adhesive manufacturers to validate and demonstrate the static load performance of thermoplastic adhesives for wood.
- Wood product manufacturers engaged in non-structural woodworking-such as furniture, interior joinery, and decorative elements-where resistant bonded joints to static loads are critical.
- Quality control and R&D teams assessing adhesive formulations for optimal load-bearing resistance in non-structural joints.
- Purchasers and specifiers requiring enhanced assurance of static load performance beyond durability classifications specified in EN 204.
This standard is instrumental in guiding selections of adhesives where joints must maintain integrity under continuous loading conditions, preventing failures that can compromise product quality and safety over time.
