Earthworks - Chemical tests - Part 1: Determination of loss on ignition
This document specifies a method for the determination of the loss on ignition (wLOI) of fine, intermediate, composite and coarse soils, organic soils and anthropogenic materials (according to
EN 16907 2) after ignition under air at 550°C.
NOTE The loss of mass suffered by these materials at 550 °C is usually due to the release of volatile compounds, water (absorbed, crystalized or structural) and gases from decomposition of organic matter and inorganic substances such as sulfur, sulfides or hydroxides (e.g. H2O, CO2, SO2).
A method is given in Annex B in order to estimate the organic matter content (COM) from the value of wLOI for clayey soils.

Overview
EN 17685-1:2023 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies a chemical testing method for determining the Loss on Ignition (LOI) in soils and related materials used in earthworks. The standard applies to fine, intermediate, composite, coarse soils, organic soils, and anthropogenic materials as defined by EN 16907-2. The LOI test involves ignition of a dried soil sample under air at 550°C to measure the mass loss, which is mainly due to the release of volatile compounds, bound water, and gases from organic matter and inorganic substances.
This method is essential for assessing soil quality and estimating the organic matter content (OM) in clayey soils, which is critical for soil classification and earthworks planning. Annex B of the standard provides a formula to estimate organic matter content based on LOI values.
Key Topics
- Scope and Purpose: The method quantifies the loss of mass from soils and materials after ignition at 550°C, indicating volatile and organic matter content affecting soil behavior and suitability for construction.
- Materials Covered: Fine to coarse soils, organic soils, anthropogenic soils including waste materials.
- Test Principle: A dried soil sample is heated to constant mass at 550°C; the mass loss percentage represents the LOI.
- Apparatus Used:
- Forced-draft drying oven (110±5°C)
- Crucibles resistant to 550°C (e.g., porcelain or fused silica)
- Muffle furnace with temperature control (550±25°C)
- Balance with precision better than 0.1%
- Desiccator with drying agent
- Test sieves (2 mm aperture per ISO 3310-1)
- Sample Preparation:
- Sieving through 63 mm and 2 mm sieves
- Drying at 110±5°C until constant mass
- Crushing coarse fractions to below 2 mm particles
- Minimum sample mass depends on maximum particle size (D_max)
- Test Procedure:
- Preheat crucibles, weigh empty crucible
- Place 0.5-15 g of dried sample (layer ≤5 mm thickness) in crucible
- Ignite at 550°C for at least 2 hours; slow ramping recommended for high-organic samples
- Cool and weigh ignited sample
- Calculation of Results:
- LOI (%) = [(m1 - m2) / (m1 - mc)] × 100
- Residue on ignition (%) = 100 - LOI
- Organic matter content for clayey soils estimated via formula in Annex B
- Reporting Requirements:
- Identifying information of sample and test details
- Measurement data (masses before and after ignition)
- LOI results and estimated organic matter content when applicable
- Any deviations or observations impacting results
Applications
EN 17685-1:2023 is widely applicable in the geotechnical, environmental, and construction sectors, including:
- Earthworks and Foundation Engineering: Assessing soil organic content helps predict soil stability, compaction behavior, and suitability for load-bearing applications.
- Soil Quality Assessment: LOI provides essential data on organic matter, which influences nutrient availability, water retention, and biodegradation processes.
- Environmental Monitoring: Detecting anthropogenic materials and contamination levels in soil via LOI helps inform remediation strategies.
- Waste and Biowaste Characterization: For sludge, peat, treated biowaste, the method supports determination of organic content impacting treatment and disposal.
- Soil Classification and Regulatory Compliance: Used in conjunction with EN 16907-2 for classification of soil types by organic content, supporting legal and technical requirements in construction projects.

5 Principle of the test
A weighted dried test portion is burned in a furnace to constant mass at (550 ± 25) °C under air. The
difference in mass before and after the ignition process is used to calculate the loss on ignition. The
determination is performed on a dried sample.
