Overview

EN 660-2:1999/A1:2003 is a European Standard developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) that focuses on the determination of wear resistance of resilient floor coverings using the Frick-Taber test. This amendment (A1:2003) updates the original 1999 standard to include an informative annex detailing the precision of the test method based on rigorous interlaboratory trials. The standard is essential for manufacturers, testers, and quality assurance professionals involved in resilient flooring materials.

Key Topics

  • Scope: Defines the methodology for assessing the wear resistance of resilient floor coverings through the Frick-Taber abrasion test.
  • Test Method: The Frick-Taber test simulates wear by subjecting floor covering samples to controlled abrasive action, measuring thickness loss as a key indicator.
  • Precision Annex: Incorporates results from a comprehensive interlaboratory study involving 15 laboratories and 17 materials, validating the test’s consistency and reliability.
  • Statistical Confidence: The amendment confirms a 95% confidence level precision limit of ±8% for measured thickness loss, ensuring trustworthy and reproducible test results.
  • Standardization Compliance: Mandates adoption by CEN member countries and harmonizes national standards related to resilient flooring wear resistance testing.

Applications

  • Quality Control in Flooring Manufacturing: Helps producers of resilient floor coverings evaluate material durability and performance consistency before market release.
  • Product Development: Assists R&D teams in comparing wear resistance of new materials and formulations under standardized conditions.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Supports compliance with European regulations and building codes requiring documented wear performance of floor coverings.
  • Construction and Facility Management: Enables specification of floor materials with verified wear resistance for commercial, retail, and public buildings.
  • Independent Testing Laboratories: Facilitates standardized testing protocols for certification and product validation services.

Related Standards

  • EN 660-1: Methods for determining the wear resistance of resilient floor coverings using different abrasion testing techniques.
  • EN ISO 10582: Covers specification for resilient floor coverings including performance criteria such as wear resistance.
  • ISO 10545: International standards related to floor covering materials and durability testing.
  • CEN/TC 134: Technical committee responsible for resilient, textile, and laminate floor coverings standardization activities.

By adhering to EN 660-2:1999/A1:2003, stakeholders benefit from a reliable and internationally recognized test method to assess the wear resistance of resilient floor coverings, contributing to higher product quality, enhanced consumer satisfaction, and regulatory compliance across Europe and beyond.
