Overview
EN ISO 17834:2003 is a European and international standard developed by CEN and ISO, focusing on thermal spraying coatings designed for protection against corrosion and oxidation at elevated temperatures-up to 1000°C (1273 K). This standard specifies the requirements for sprayed metal coatings applied primarily on iron and steel, to enhance their durability and performance in high-temperature environments. It excludes coatings like sprayed aluminium and zinc for atmospheric corrosion, which are covered under ISO 2063.
The standard covers material selection, application processes, coating characteristics, and appropriate subsequent treatments, ensuring uniform protection and long service life in demanding industrial conditions.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
- Applicable to sprayed metal coatings protecting against corrosion and oxidation up to 1000°C.
- Covers materials such as nickel/chromium alloys, iron/chromium/aluminium alloys, and metal/chromium/aluminium/yttrium alloys.
- Excludes non-metallic coatings and atmospheric corrosion protection by aluminium and zinc, which follow separate standards.
Materials and Coating Processes
- Consideration for oxidation, sulphur, chlorine, and molten salt exposures.
- Recommended coating materials based on environmental factors:
- Aluminium for pure oxidizing conditions.
- Iron or nickel-based alloys with specific chromium content for environments with sulphur or chlorine.
- Chromium additions for molten salt corrosion resistance.
- Coating thickness ranges depending on material and service class (nominal thickness typically between 0.1 mm and 0.4 mm).
Application Requirements
- Surface preparation per EN 13507 ensuring clean, dry, and defect-free surfaces.
- Immediate application after surface prep with maximum 4-hour delay unless controlled storage is ensured.
- Uniform texture without lumps or contamination.
- Coating re-treatment protocols for defective areas.
Service Conditions and Treatment
- Classification of coating service environments (oxidizing, sulphurous, chlorinated, molten salts).
- Guidance on sealing or heat treatment after coating (e.g., silicone sealing for specific temperature ranges).
- Coating thickness and treatment tailored to temperature and environment.
Design Recommendations
- Structures should be designed to enable full surface access and uniform coating.
- Avoid design features that facilitate corrosion focal points.
- Ensure easy inspection, cleaning, and maintenance to maximize coating effectiveness and longevity.
Applications
EN ISO 17834:2003 is essential for industries where equipment operates under harsh thermal conditions and faces high risks of corrosion and oxidation, including:
- Power generation plants (boilers, turbines)
- Petrochemical and chemical processing equipment
- Metallurgical plants and furnaces
- Automotive and aerospace components exposed to high temperatures
- Industrial machinery needing enhanced surface protection in oxidizing or chemically aggressive environments
By applying coatings compliant with this standard, manufacturers and maintenance teams can extend service life, reduce downtime, and improve operational safety.
Related Standards
- ISO 2063 – Thermal spraying of aluminium and zinc coatings for atmospheric corrosion protection.
- EN ISO 14919 – Classification and technical conditions for spraying wires, rods, and cords.
- EN 1274 & ISO 14232 – Technical supply conditions for powders used in thermal spraying.
- EN 13507 – Surface pre-treatment protocols for components prior to thermal spraying.
These complementary standards support a comprehensive approach to thermal spraying, covering material supply, surface preparation, and specific coating applications to meet industrial requirements.
By adhering to EN ISO 17834:2003, organizations ensure robust thermal spray coatings that provide reliable corrosion and oxidation protection at elevated temperatures, fostering safer and more durable industrial operations.
