Overview

The prEN 489-2 standard, developed by CEN/TC 107, specifies the requirements and test methods for joint casing systems used in factory-made flexible district heating pipe systems with plastic service pipes. It applies to joint casing systems connecting adjacent pipes, fittings, or valve assemblies compliant with EN 15632-1 to -3, EN 17878-1 to -3, or EN 17414-1 to -3 series standards. This standard does not cover joint casing systems for rigid pipes (EN 253) or those under EN 15632-4, which fall under EN 489-1.

The document ensures that joint casing systems maintain structural integrity, leak tightness, and adequate thermal insulation, essential for efficient and durable district heating networks. It provides installation guidance, performance criteria, and standardized testing procedures to support quality and reliability in joint casing assemblies.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability: Focuses on flexible factory-made pipe systems with plastic service pipes; excludes rigid systems and specific joint casing systems covered by other standards.

  • Installation Instructions: Emphasizes detailed and clear manufacturer guidance, covering storage, environmental conditions, tool requirements, surface preparation, foam quality assessment, and foam quantity for on-site insulated joints.

  • Requirements:

    • Resistance to External Loads: Must comply with ring stiffness and impact resistance values as per EN 15632-1.
    • Leak Tightness: Joint casing systems shall withstand leak tightness tests ensuring zero water ingress.
    • Thermal Insulation: Insulation thickness must be no less than 50% of the connected pipe insulation and never less than 15 mm, with water absorption in accordance to EN 15632-1.
    • Use of Rework Material: Allowed only if product quality remains uncompromised.
    • Plugs and Closures: On-site foamed casing systems require secure sealed or welded plugs that pass relevant leak tightness and mechanical requirements.
  • Test Methods:

    • Preparation of test specimens follows manufacturer’s installation instructions.
    • Leak tightness testing involves immersion in a water tank under constant pressure (30 ± 1 kPa) for 24 hours with colorant added to detect water ingress.
    • Multiple configurations (straight, T-branch, elbow) must be tested across the full manufacturing range.
  • Quality Control and Testing:

    • Manufacturer type testing verifies materials and production methods.
    • Ongoing quality control ensures product consistency.
    • Additional inspection reinforces manufacturer accountability through sampling and extended checks.

Applications

prEN 489-2 is essential for manufacturers, installers, and operators in the district heating sector focused on flexible pipe systems with plastic service pipes. Its rigorous requirements for joint casing systems help to:

  • Extend the service life of district heating networks by ensuring joints are durable and thermally efficient.
  • Minimize energy losses through strict insulation standards at pipe joints.
  • Prevent leakages that can lead to costly repairs and system downtime.
  • Guide proper installation practices to maintain system performance.
  • Support compliance with European normative frameworks, facilitating trade and interoperability across member states.

This standard serves as a foundation for sustainable and reliable district heating infrastructure, contributing to energy efficiency and environmental protection.

Related Standards

  • EN 15632-1 to -3: General requirements and test methods for flexible pipe systems with plastic service pipes.
  • EN 17878-1 to -3: Standards for factory-made flexible pipe systems with lower temperature profiles.
  • EN 17414-1 to -3: Related series for district cooling flexible pipe systems.
  • EN 489-1: Covers joint casing systems for bonded pipe systems under EN 15632-4.
  • EN 253: Rigid pre-insulated bonded pipe systems for buried hot water networks.
  • EN 17248: Terms and definitions for district heating and cooling pipe systems.

Understanding these related documents alongside prEN 489-2 helps stakeholders ensure comprehensive compliance and robust design of district heating pipe networks.
