prEN 489-1 is a CEN draft European Standard for joint casing assemblies and thermal insulation in bonded single and twin pipe systems for buried hot and cold-water networks. It specifies requirements and test methods for joint casing systems used between adjacent factory-made pipe, fitting and valve assemblies, mainly for systems with metal service pipes, and it also addresses the other pipe system families named in the scope.
What does prEN 489-1 specify?
prEN 489-1 covers the requirements and test methods for joint casing systems used in buried heating and cooling water networks. The scope includes single and twin pipes, and it states that the requirements are the same for single and twin pipe joint casing systems.
The document is organized into seven clauses and three annexes:
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Normative overview of available joint casing systems and the test combinations for each system type |
| Annex B | Informative schematic drawings showing the principle of joint casing systems |
| Annex C | Informative guidance for inspection and testing, including type test, quality control and additional inspection |
Clause 4 sets the product requirements, clause 5 gives the test methods, clause 6 covers marking, and clause 7 covers reporting. The scope also notes that for bedding materials other than those defined in 5.2.3, additional precautions are given in EN 13941-2.
What are the key requirements of prEN 489-1?
prEN 489-1 focuses on watertightness, mechanical resistance and insulation quality at joints. In practice, that means the joint casing system must be designed, installed and tested so the buried joint performs as a sealed part of the pipe system, not as a weak point.
Joint casing design and type testing
Clause 4.2 requires each joint casing system to be supplied with a product data sheet and installation instruction, and with a safety data sheet for any major component if relevant. This matters because the installer and tester need the same documented system definition that was used for type testing.
Clause 4.2.2 requires the system to be watertight and able to withstand radial forces, temperature, and temperature variations. Clause 4.2.3 requires installation to follow the supplier’s instructions so the installed joint matches the type-tested joint.
Joint casing materials and insulation
Clause 4.3.1 allows joint casings of non-crosslinked polyethylene (PE) or crosslinked polyethylene (PE-X). For PE-X, the degree of crosslinking shall be at least 40% when tested by EN ISO 10147.
Clause 4.3.2 requires the polyurethane (PUR) foam thermal insulation, whether filled on site or prefabricated, to completely fill the joint. The foam density, compressive strength, cell structure and water absorption at elevated temperature are aligned with EN 253. In practice, the joint insulation has to match the pipe insulation family it belongs to.
Performance tests for joints
Clause 4.3.3 requires the soil stress test, and a joint passes when the subsequent water tightness test shows no water ingress. Clause 4.3.4 requires no water ingress after the water tightness test for all joint casing systems.
Clause 4.3.5 requires each circumferential and longitudinal weld to pass the stress crack resistance (SCR) test, with failure time at least 115 h. This is important for welded systems because the welds are part of the long-term barrier against moisture entry.
Clause 4.3.6 distinguishes sealed plugs and welded plugs for on-site foamed systems. Sealed plugs are tested as part of the sealed joint casing system, while welded plugs must also pass the bending test after the water tightness test.
Clause 4.3.7 sets the melt mass-flow rate (MFR) range for welded plug material. This gives a simple material check for weldability and consistency before the plug is accepted for use.
Installation instructions and surveillance systems
Clause 4.4 says installation instructions are part of the manufacturer’s documentation and part of the type test report. The instructions must cover storage, environmental conditions, component identification, tools, surface preparation, leak-tightness tests if relevant, foam quality checks, foaming quantity and on-site inspection.
Clause 4.5 requires proper procedures for connecting measuring elements of a surveillance system before assembly, and the procedure has to comply with EN 14419. This matters where the joint casing also carries monitoring functions.
What terms does prEN 489-1 define?
- Joint casing system - The assembled casing and sealing solution used to close and insulate the field joint between adjacent pipe elements.
- Sealed joint - A joint casing system that relies on sealing components such as adhesive strip, shrink sleeve or film to achieve watertightness.
- Welded joint - A joint casing system that uses welded closure features, including circumferential and/or longitudinal welds.
- PUR - Polyurethane foam used as thermal insulation in the joint, filled on site or supplied as prefabricated insulation.
- SCR - Stress crack resistance, the resistance of PE material and weld areas to cracking under the specified test.
- MFR - Melt mass-flow rate, used here to check welded plug material.
- PE-X - Crosslinked polyethylene, used for joint casings where a minimum crosslinking degree is required.
Who uses prEN 489-1?
prEN 489-1 is used by manufacturers of district heating and district cooling joint casing systems, especially when they design sealed or welded joints for buried networks. Testing laboratories and certification bodies use it for type testing, specimen preparation, water tightness testing, SCR testing and reporting.
It is also relevant to installers, because the document places weight on installation instructions, component identification and site procedures. Quality managers, surveillance-system suppliers and buyers use it to check whether a joint casing system has the right test evidence, marking and documentation for a specific buried network application.
What changed in prEN 489-1 from the previous edition?
prEN 489-1 will supersede EN 489-1:2019. The technical changes stated in the document are:
- the scope was extended to flexible pipe systems according to EN 15632-4 with metal service pipes;
- editorial updates and reference updates were made throughout the document;
- a minimum requirement and evidence for the degree of crosslinking in crosslinked PE materials was added in 4.3.1;
- clause 4.3.3 was reworded for clarity;
- the requirement for witness during preparation of the test specimen was clarified in 5.1;
- the permissible sand loss in the sandbox test was reduced in 5.2.5;
- the dimensions of the joint casings in the SCR test were specified in 5.4;
- joint casing system 1.5 was added to Annex A;
- schematic drawings were added in Annex B;
- Annex C was expanded with additional inspection guidance.
