Overview
EN ISO 9241-300:2008 (ISO 9241-300:2008) is the introductory part of the ISO 9241 “300” subseries on ergonomics of human–system interaction for electronic visual displays. It explains the subseries’ modular structure, scope and purpose: to establish performance‑based display ergonomics requirements and provide test methods and metrology for design evaluation and conformance. The standard targets effective and comfortable viewing for users with normal or adjusted‑to‑normal eyesight and is applicable across diverse tasks and work environments.
Key topics and requirements
- Modular structure: Introduces how the subseries is organized so new technologies, tasks and environments can be covered without reworking the core guidance.
- Performance specifications: Emphasizes requirements stated as measurable performance criteria rather than prescriptive design rules.
- Conformance framework: Directs use of ISO 9241-307 for compliance routes and links testing methods to appropriate parts of the subseries.
- Test methods and metrology: References three primary testing approaches:
- ISO 9241-304 - user performance (usability) laboratory test methods
- ISO 9241-305 - optical and electrical laboratory test methods
- ISO 9241-306 - field assessment methods for workplace evaluation
- Terminology and definitions: Points to ISO 9241-302 for consistent terms used across the subseries.
- Integrated vs modular products: Discusses when display systems or modules (monitors, graphics adapters, software) can be type‑tested individually and when combined or field testing is required.
- Work environment considerations: Recognizes environmental factors (lighting, viewing distance, tasks) that affect human–display interaction and testing strategies.
Applications and who uses it
EN ISO 9241-300 is used by:
- Display manufacturers - to design ergonomic displays and provide conformance test data.
- Ergonomists and human factors engineers - to evaluate visual ergonomics and specify requirements.
- Test laboratories (optical and usability labs) - to apply ISO/IEC 17025‑compatible methods (ISO 9241-304/305).
- Procurement and compliance officers - to define ergonomic acceptance criteria for purchased equipment.
- Workplace designers and safety managers - to assess displays in situ using field methods (ISO 9241-306). Practical uses include product design validation, usability testing, procurement specifications, workplace assessments, and regulatory/compliance reporting.

ISO 9241-300:2008(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 9241-300 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 159, Ergonomics, Subcommittee SC 4,

explains its modular structure. The ISO 9241 “300” subseries establishes requirements for the ergonomic
design of electronic visual displays. These requirements are stated as performance specifications, aimed at
ensuring effective and comfortable viewing conditions for users with normal or adjusted-to-normal eyesight.
Test methods and metrology, yielding conformance measurements and criteria, are provided for design
evaluation.
The ISO 9241 “300” subseries is applicable to the visual ergonomics design of electronic visual displays for a
diversity of tasks in a wide variety of work environments.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in ISO 9241-302 apply.

4 Conformance
Conformance shall be achieved by the use of an applicable compliance method according to ISO 9241-307,
with consideration of the related test method or methods specified in ISO 9241-304, ISO 9241-305 and/or
ISO 9241-306. If a compliance method cannot be established, ISO 9241-303 shall be used as a design
guideline for applying ISO 9241-304, ISO 9241-305 or ISO 9241-306, as relevant to the devising question.
5 Overview of the ISO 9241 “300” subseries
The structure of the ISO 9241 “300” subseries (see Table 1) — itself part of the ISO 9241 series of
ergonomics standards (see Annex A) — is intended to maximize the future extendibility of the subseries,
allowing it to cover new technologies, tasks and environments, while at the same time minimizing that portion
of its content that will be needed by a particular user.
⎯ ISO 9241-302 defines terms that are common to the entire subseries.
⎯ ISO 9241-303 presents the basic ergonomics guiding principles and performance requirements,
independent of technology, task and environment, based on human performance criteria. These
requirements cannot be assessed as such, since every requirement has to be assessed using a test
method applicable to the particular technology, task and environment in question.
