Overview

EN ISO 23996:2012 is an international standard developed by CEN and ISO that specifies methods for determining the density of resilient floor coverings. It is applicable to homogeneous resilient floor coverings and the solid layers of other resilient floor coverings. This standard ensures consistent measurement practices, enabling manufacturers, testers, and quality control professionals to reliably assess product density.

The standard supersedes EN 436:1994 and references ISO 23996:2007, endorsing two primary methods for density determination – immersion and dimensional measurement. Consistency in density determination is crucial for flooring performance evaluation, quality assurance, and compliance with industry regulations.

Key Topics

  • Scope: Defines two methods for density measurement of resilient floor coverings-Method A (liquid immersion) and Method B (dimensional and mass measurement).
  • Sampling: Specifies taking three test specimens or samples of at least 1000 mm × 1000 mm for sheets to ensure representativeness.
  • Conditioning: Samples must be conditioned at 23 ± 2 °C and 50 ± 5 % relative humidity for at least 24 hours before testing.
  • Method A – Immersion Method:
    • Involves weighing a test piece suspended in distilled water.
    • Uses balance with 1 mg sensitivity, distilled water with wetting agent at 23 ± 2 °C, and thin wires to suspend the specimen.
    • Density calculated by comparing specimen weight in air and when immersed.
  • Method B – Dimensional Method:
    • Uses measured mass and volume (length, width, thickness) of rectangular specimens.
    • Suitable only when surface and back side are smooth (no texture).
    • Requires precision instruments to measure dimensions and mass with high accuracy.
  • Precision & Repeatability: Round-robin tests are planned to establish reproducibility and precision of both methods.
  • Test Reporting: Includes detailed documentation such as test method used, sample identification, testing dates, any deviations, and the mean density result.

Applications

The EN ISO 23996:2012 standard is valuable for:

  • Manufacturers of resilient flooring to verify product density for quality control and specification compliance.
  • Testing laboratories performing standardized density measurements for homogeneous floor coverings and solid resilient layers.
  • Building contractors and specifiers to ensure floor coverings meet required density parameters for durability and performance.
  • Regulatory bodies setting product standards in flooring materials for safety and performance certifications.
  • Material researchers and product developers evaluating new resilient flooring compositions or layers by their density characteristics.

Accurate density measurement influences key properties such as wear resistance, stability, and overall quality of resilient flooring products, making this standard essential in ensuring market consistency and product reliability.

Related Standards

EN ISO 23996:2012 aligns with and references:

  • ISO 24342 – Resilient and textile floor coverings - Determination of side length, edge straightness, and squareness of tiles.
  • ISO 24346 – Resilient floor coverings - Determination of overall thickness.
  • ISO 1183 – Plastics - Methods for determining the density of non-cellular plastics (provides general principles applicable for density tests).
  • Supersedes EN 436:1994 which it replaces for density determination in resilient floor coverings.

These related standards complement EN ISO 23996 by addressing entire dimensional measurements and specific test conditions related to resilient flooring quality assurance. Compliance with these harmonized standards supports comprehensive flooring product evaluation.

By following EN ISO 23996:2012, flooring professionals can achieve accurate, reproducible, and standardized density measurements essential for product compliance, performance assessment, and quality assurance in the resilient floor covering industry.
