Bitumens and bituminous binders - Determination of adhesivity of cut-back and fluxed bituminous binders by water immersion test - Aggregate method

This document specifies a method for the determination of the adhesivity of cut-back and fluxed bituminous binders coated onto aggregate when immersed in water.
The method can be used with a reference aggregate. In that case, it measures the intrinsic adhesion behaviour of a cut-back and fluxed bituminous binder. The method can also be used with a specific aggregate as used on a job site.
WARNING - The use of this document can involve hazardous materials, operations and equipment. This document does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this document to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For environmental reasons and to reduce emissions to air, water and soil, it is recommended to limit the use of products, solvents and energy to the minimum required for a valid test result.

European foreword
This document (prEN 15626:2024) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 336 “Bitumens
and bituminous binders”, the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR.
This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
This document will supersede EN 15626:2016.
In comparison with the previous edition, the main technical changes are:
— normative references were updated throughout the text (reference to EN 13702 was deleted in 8.1.3,
8.2.1 and 8.3.1);
— removal of the use of a heating plate or heating device when mixing aggregates with binder in 8.2.2
and 8.3.2;
— the binder is now poured onto the aggregates and the procedure including prior mixing shall be done
in less than 90 s (see 8.2.2 and 8.3.2);
— curing and conditioning of the coated aggregate is conducted within a heat resistant glass dish and
in the form of a monolayer of materials instead of being placed into a beaker (see 8.2.2, 8.3.3 and
8.3.4);
— assessment is conducted under water (which can be replaced if dirty) and with the help of an
appropriate lamp (see 8.3.5);
— tolerance on the conditioning time (see 8.2.3, 8.3.3 et 8.3.4) is reduced from ±4 h to ±2 h.
1 Scope
This document specifies a method for the determination of the adhesivity of cut-back and fluxed
bituminous binders coated onto aggregate when immersed in water.
The method can be used with a reference aggregate. In that case, it measures the intrinsic adhesion
behaviour of a cut-back and fluxed bituminous binder. The method can also be used with a specific
aggregate as used on a job site.
WARNING — The use of this document can involve hazardous materials, operations and equipment. This
document does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It is the
responsibility of the user of this document to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to
determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For environmental reasons and to
reduce emissions to air, water and soil, it is recommended to limit the use of products, solvents and
energy to the minimum required for a valid test result.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in EN 12597 and the following apply.
ISO and IEC maintain terminology databases for use in standardization at the following addresses:
— ISO Online browsing platform: available at https://www.iso.org/obp
— IEC Electropedia: available at https://www.electropedia.org
3.1
adhesion
ability of a binder to coat the surface of an aggregate and to remain bonded over time in the presence of
water
3.2
adhesivity
qualitative assessment of the adhesion (3.1)
3.3
ambient temperature
temperature between 18 °C and 28 °C
4 Principle
The binder is mixed thoroughly with a dry and clean aggregate under specified temperature conditions.
After specified pre-conditioning procedures depending on the viscosity of the binder, the mixture is
immersed in water. After a given time under specified conditions, the percentage of the aggregate surface
covered with binder is assessed visually.
Conformity to the adhesivity requirement, in accordance with EN 15322, shall be assessed while
measuring the binder adhesion with a reference aggregate.
5 Reagents and materials
5.1 Aggregate, as light in colour as possible, being either a reference aggregate or an aggregate to be
used on a specific job site. This aggregate shall either pass through:
— a sieve (see Reference [1]) having a mesh size of 10 mm and be retained on a sieve having a mesh
size of 6,3 mm (sieve sizes belonging to the [basic set plus set 2] sizes specified in EN 13043);
— a sieve having a mesh size of 11 mm and be retained on a sieve having a mesh size of 8 mm (sieve
sizes belonging to the [basic set plus set 1] sizes specified in EN 13043).
NOTE Each country can define petrographically its own reference aggregates, for instance, in a national
informative annex.
5.2 Water, distilled or deionized, conforming to quality 3 of EN ISO 3696:1995.
5.3 Cleaning agents, conventionally used in a laboratory.
6 Apparatus
6.1 Ventilated oven, capable of maintaining a temperature of 60 °C with a maximum permissible
measurement error of ±3 °C.
Temperature shall be checked in the surroundings of the sample(s).
6.2 Ventilated oven, capable of maintaining any temperature in the range of [30 to 150] °C with a
maximum permissible measurement error of ±5 °C.
Temperature shall be checked in the surroundings of the sample(s).
6.3 Spatula.
6.4 Heat resistant dishes, approximately 150 mm to 200 mm in diameter.
6.5 Two heat resistant glass dishes with cover, with a minimum surface area of 300 cm and a
minimum inner height of 20 mm.
NOTE A 200 mm diameter Petri dish with a minimum inner height of 20 mm satisfies these conditions.
6.6 Balance, having a suitable measuring range and having a maximum permissible measurement
error of ±1 g within the testing range.
6.7 Lid or Aluminium foil, suitable for use as a loose cover.
7 Sampling
Sample the test material in accordance with EN 58. Prepare the test samples in accordance with
EN 12594.
8 Procedure
8.1 Preparation of aggregates and binders
8.1.1 Wash the aggregate (5.1) with water (5.2) and dry it in the ventilated oven (6.2) at (110 ± 5) °C
until constant mass has been achieved.
8.1.2 The quantities of aggregates needed for the tests to be carried out under 8.2 and 8.3 shall be
weighed into heat resistant dish(es) (6.4) by batches of (200 ± 2) g or (400 ± 4) g.
Depending on the binder to be tested, bring the aggregates in the dish(es) to be used for the mixing
procedure to the temperature indicated in Table 1 and maintain this temperature in the ventilated oven
(6.2) for about 2 h.
8.1.3 A binder sample of a minimum amount of 200 g shall be prepared in accordance with EN 12594
and brought to the temperature indicated in Table 1. The efflux time shall be determined in accordance
with EN 12846-2 and dynamic viscosity at 60 °C in accordance with EN 13302.
For well-known binders, it is not necessary to measure the efflux time or the dynamic viscosity to
determine the heating temperature prior testing.
Cover the container with aluminium foil or a loose fitting lid (6.7) to minimize the loss of volatiles during
heating.
Leave the binder in the ventilated oven (6.2) long enough to ensure that it reaches the temperature given
in Table 1. Care shall be taken to avoid local overheating.
Binder formulated with an adhesion improver should be tested under the representative conditions of
its use.
NOTE The conditions of use of this binder can be, for example, a binder stored one or several days in a closed
container at its typical storage temperature, taking all precautions so that the evolution of the binder for the test is
representative of factory storage.
