Overview
EN ISO 15147:2012 is an international standard developed by ISO and adopted by CEN that specifies the methods for measuring widths and lengths of cut light conveyor belts, as defined in ISO 21183-1. The standard also sets forth tolerances applicable to these dimensions to ensure quality and compatibility in conveyor belt manufacturing and application. This standard replaces the earlier 1999 edition and applies to light conveyor belts used across various industrial sectors.
Key Topics
Measurement Methods
The standard describes precise procedures for determining the widths and lengths of cut light conveyor belts. It covers:- Width measurement at three equidistant points along the belt's length using appropriate linear measurement tools.
- Length measurement for:
- Endless belts and open-ended belts prepared for splicing-calculated by summing individual flat-length segments and adjusted for belt thickness.
- Open-ended belts not prepared for splicing (slab belting)-measured via mechanical or electromechanical linear measurement methods ensuring no tension is applied.
Tolerances on Dimensions
EN ISO 15147:2012 defines specific tolerance limits to account for manufacturing variability:- Width tolerances vary depending on the belt width range and the material’s moisture absorption properties (e.g., polyester vs. cotton or polyamide).
- Length tolerances differ based on belt type, with tolerances provided for endless belts, open-ended belts prepared for splicing, and slab belting.
- Typical width tolerances range from ±1 mm for narrow belts (below 200 mm) up to ±8 mm or 0.3% of width for very wide belts (above 4,000 mm).
- Length tolerances include fixed millimeter values for shorter belts and percentage tolerances for longer belts.
Applicability and Standards Integration
The standard is consistent with ISO 21183-1, which defines principal characteristics and applications of light conveyor belts. It ensures harmonization across national standards within CEN member countries.
Applications
EN ISO 15147:2012 is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and users of light conveyor belts in industries including:
Material Handling and Packaging
Ensuring conveyor belts fit precisely in machinery reduces downtime and improves efficiency. Accurate dimensional control helps maintain consistent belt performance.Food and Pharmaceutical Processing
Compliance with dimensional tolerances ensures hygienic and safe conveyor belt operation with minimal risk of mechanical failure during product transport.Automotive and Electronics Assembly Lines
Precision belt sizing supports high-speed production lines where exact conveyor performance is critical for quality and timing.Logistics and Warehousing Systems
Standardized belt dimensions allow easy integration into modular conveyor systems and facilitate maintenance and belt replacement.
