Overview

EN 1715-2:2008 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies the specific requirements for aluminium and aluminium alloys drawing stock used in electrical applications. It provides a detailed framework ensuring the quality, consistency, and suitability of aluminium products utilized for electrical wires, cables, and other conductive components. This standard complements the general requirements outlined in EN 1715-1 and excludes drawn wire, focusing instead on drawing stock materials.

Approved in 2008, EN 1715-2 aims to harmonize technical conditions, chemical composition, mechanical properties, and electrical characteristics across European markets. It is vital for manufacturers, suppliers, and buyers in the aluminium electrical sector seeking to meet regulated quality demands and ensure compliance with EU-wide benchmarks.

Key Topics

Chemical Composition Requirements

  • Defines specific aluminium alloys for electrical purposes such as:
    • EN AW-1110 (Al 99.1)
    • EN AW-8030 (Al FeCu)
    • EN AW-8176 (Al FeSi)
    • Alloy variants EN AW-5005, EN AW-6101, EN AW-6201, and others
  • Sets maximum limits and ranges for key elements like Si, Fe, Cu, Mn, Mg, Cr, Ni, Zn, Ti, Ga, V, and B.
  • Chemical compliance must align with EN 573-3, with additional limits provided for certain alloys in an annex.

Mechanical Properties and Temper Designations

  • Specifies mechanical strength, elongation, and temper conditions for various aluminium alloys to achieve required performance.
  • Common tempers include:
    • F (as manufactured)
    • O (annealed)
    • H types (H11, H12, H13, H14, H16, H24) for cold work hardening
    • T1 and T4 for age-hardened alloys
  • Applies mechanical testing frequency and criteria to ensure batch compliance.

Electrical Characteristics

  • Electrical resistivity and conductivity requirements are key for electrical usability.
  • Resistivity testing conducted per IEC 60468 with minimum required conductivity percentages of the International Annealed Copper Standard (IACS).
  • Ensures minimal electrical losses and performance consistency in aluminium wire drawing stock.

Inspection, Testing, and Delivery Documentation

  • Mandates chemical composition checks for every casting.
  • Mechanical and electrical testing must be performed with defined frequencies.
  • Delivery must include documentation such as a certificate of mass and analysis, test reports detailing alloy identification, temper, mechanical/electrical test results, manufacturing and heat treatment dates, and coil numbers.
  • Marking and packaging conform to EN 1715-1 guidelines.

Applications

EN 1715-2:2008 is critical for industries involved in:

  • Electrical power transmission and distribution: Aluminium drawing stock meeting this standard is used to manufacture overhead power lines and electrical cables.
  • Wire and cable manufacturing: Ensures raw material quality for making single and stranded wires with high electrical conductivity.
  • Electrical equipment production: Provides reliable aluminium stock for components where electrical performance and mechanical properties are crucial.
  • Automotive and aerospace electrical systems: Supports the fabrication of lightweight, electrically conductive aluminium wiring.
  • Renewable energy sectors: Suitable for efficient wiring in solar and wind power systems requiring stringent electrical standards.

Adherence to EN 1715-2 helps suppliers and manufacturers assure clients of product consistency, quality, and performance in critical electrical applications.

Related Standards

For comprehensive compliance and quality control, EN 1715-2:2008 is used alongside the following standards:

  • EN 1715-1: General requirements and technical conditions for inspection and delivery of aluminium and aluminium alloys drawing stock.
  • EN 515: Temper designations for wrought aluminium and aluminium alloys.
  • EN 573-3: Chemical composition and form of wrought aluminium products.
  • IEC 60468: Method to measure electrical resistivity of metallic materials.
  • Other Parts of EN 1715 series:
    • Part 3: Specific requirements for mechanical uses (excluding welding).
    • Part 4: Specific requirements for welding applications.
    • Part 5: Specific requirements for aluminium food packaging (under preparation).

Following these interconnected standards ensures a full quality management system from raw material specification to final application in electrical products.

By conforming to EN 1715-2:2008, manufacturers and users of aluminium drawing stock can consistently achieve the necessary performance in electrical conductivity, mechanical strength, and traceable quality-key factors for safe, efficient, and reliable electrical infrastructure.
