Overview
prEN 16914 is a draft European standard developed by CEN/TC 132 that specifies the technical delivery conditions for hot-rolled armour plates produced from weldable aluminium alloys. These aluminium armour plates are intended for ballistic protection applications and are available in two categories - ARAL1 (10 mm to 70 mm thick) and ARAL2 (10 mm to 80 mm thick). The document covers requirements such as chemical composition, mechanical properties, testing procedures, inspection, marking, and quality assurance for both material categories.
This standard supersedes EN 16914:2017 and aligns with the latest technical and quality management practices for aluminium armour plate production within Europe, supporting industries that rely on high-performance, weldable aluminium alloys for protective solutions.
Key Topics
- Material Designation: The standard defines plate categories (ARAL1, ARAL2) based on alloy composition and mechanical characteristics, referencing temper designations as per EN 515.
- Chemical and Mechanical Requirements: Specifies strict ranges for chemical composition and mechanical values (tensile strength, yield strength, elongation) depending on the category. Procedures for testing at room temperature are described.
- Dimensional Tolerances: Sets requirements for nominal thickness, width, length, and flatness. Reference standards EN 485-1, EN 485-3 are used for tolerances on dimensions and form for hot-rolled products.
- Testing and Inspection:
- Mechanical Testing: Procedures for sampling and evaluation of tensile properties are defined.
- Ballistic Testing: Ballistic performance of each production lot must be verified according to defined methods (NF A 50-800-2 and NF A 50-800-3).
- Stress Corrosion Testing: For ARAL1 plates ≥20 mm, a specific stress corrosion test must be performed, with strict acceptance criteria outlined.
- Surface and Edge Quality: Plates must be free of imperfections that could affect welding or protective performance, visually inspected and confirmed using non-destructive testing when required.
- Marking and Documentation: Mandatory marking of each plate with relevant identifiers. Inspection documents, such as type 3.1 or 3.2 per EN 10204, must be supplied containing comprehensive results and traceability data.
Applications
Weldable aluminium alloy armour plates standardized by prEN 16914 are designed for use where lightweight, reliable, and corrosion-resistant ballistic protection is required. Leading application areas include:
- Military Vehicles & Equipment: Armour panels for ground vehicles, naval craft, and protective enclosures.
- Security and Law Enforcement: Armoured vehicles and protective barriers in civilian or government use.
- Infrastructure: Protective panels for critical infrastructure and high-value property.
- Specialized Engineering Projects: Where both formability (including welding) and certified ballistic resistance in aluminium alloys are critical.
By following prEN 16914, manufacturers and purchasers can ensure repeatable quality, improved safety, and full compliance with European best practice for aluminium alloy protection plates.
Related Standards
prEN 16914 references several important European and international standards, guaranteeing interoperability and consistent quality, including:
- EN 485-1 / EN 485-3: Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Sheet, strip, and plate - Technical and dimensional conditions.
- EN 515: Temper designations for wrought aluminium products.
