Overview

EN ISO 17236:2025 is an essential international standard titled Leather - Physical and mechanical tests - Determination of extension set. Published in June 2025 by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) in collaboration with the International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies (IULTCS), this standard specifies a reliable method to measure the extension set of leather materials. Primarily designed for upholstery leather, it applies broadly to all flexible leathers, ensuring consistent and repeatable testing results across the leather industry.

This third edition supersedes the 2016 version and includes updates that align terminology with ISO 2418 and ISO 2419 standards. Its objective is to provide a standardized procedure that helps manufacturers, quality controllers, and researchers evaluate leather’s mechanical behavior under repeated stretching, thus supporting product development, quality assurance, and compliance testing.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Purpose
Determines the permanent deformation (extension set) of leather after cyclic tensile loading, which is crucial for assessing durability and performance in end-use applications.

  • Testing Principle
The standard involves cyclically extending a leather test piece to a set force level, holding it under load, and then measuring the residual extension after unloading. The extension set is expressed as a percentage of the initial gauge length.

  • Specimen Preparation and Conditioning
Test specimens are cut from leather samples following ISO 2418, conditioned under standard atmospheres per ISO 2419, and thickness measurements are taken according to ISO 2589 to ensure uniformity and accuracy.

  • Apparatus Requirements
Utilizes a tensile testing machine calibrated according to ISO 7500-1, equipped with jaws that prevent slippage, a press knife for precise specimen cutting, a ruler, thickness gauge, and stopwatch for timing loading cycles.

  • Test Procedure

    • Mark specimens with parallel lines to gauge elongation length.
    • Subject specimens to five tensile load cycles reaching 20 N ± 0.5 N.
    • Maintain load for 10 seconds during each cycle.
    • Measure extension after a waiting period of 60 seconds post-testing.
    • Calculate extension set percentage using a defined formula.
  • Results and Reporting
Reports must include detailed identification of test specimens, environmental conditioning parameters, pre-load values, average extension set values, specimen thickness, deviations from the test method, and test date.

Applications

EN ISO 17236:2025 is vital for industries and professionals involved with leather product manufacturing and testing, particularly where leather durability and mechanical properties are critical. Key applications include:

  • Upholstery Leather Quality Control
Ensuring leather used in furniture maintains dimensional stability under mechanical stress for better longevity and comfort.

  • Footwear and Leather Goods Testing
Assessing the extension behavior helps predict product performance during wear and handling.

  • Research and Development
Supporting material innovation by providing accurate mechanical property data to guide formulation adjustments.

  • Regulatory Compliance and Certification
Facilitates meeting customer and regulatory requirements for leather physical properties through consistent testing protocols.

Related Standards

To fully comply and implement EN ISO 17236:2025, familiarity with associated standards is recommended:

  • ISO 2418 - Leather: Specimen preparation and positioning.
  • ISO 2419 - Conditioning and testing environments of leather specimens.
  • ISO 2589 - Leather: Methods for measuring leather thickness.
  • ISO 7500-1:2018 - Calibration and verification methods for tensile testing machines.

By following EN ISO 17236:2025 in conjunction with these standards, organizations can ensure comprehensive and harmonized evaluation of leather's mechanical properties, thereby improving product reliability and competitive advantage.
