Overview
CEN/TR 15339-3:2014 is a comprehensive Technical Report issued by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), detailing safety requirements for thermal spraying equipment, specifically focusing on spray torches and their associated connection and supply units. This standard is integral to ensuring the safe design, manufacture, and operation of thermal spraying equipment used across industrial surface treatment applications.
The document specifies mandatory safety features for spray torches-including flame, HVOF (High Velocity Oxygen Fuel), cold spraying, arc spraying, and plasma spraying torches-and covers the safety of gas hoses, hose assemblies, electrical and water junctions, and power sources. It serves as a crucial reference for manufacturers, integrators, and users to prevent hazards related to combustible gases, high voltages, and pressurized systems during thermal spraying processes.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
This standard applies to thermal spraying equipment components such as spray torches, gas and electrical connections in junction boxes, and power sources. It excludes equipment for induction plasma spraying, water-stabilized plasma spraying, and plasma spraying within controlled chambers.Safety Features of Spray Torches
Requirements include safeguards for fuel and oxygen supply, powder or wire feed, combustion processes, and cooling media circulation. Each torch type-flame, HVOF, cold, arc, and plasma-has tailored safety considerations addressing electrical connections, temperature control, and gas flow integrity.Ignition and Power Source Safety
The standard mandates protection against electrical hazards, including EMC compliance (according to EN 60974-10), reliable ignition systems, proper fusing, and cooling mechanisms to prevent overheating and electrical faults.Hazard Identification
Key hazards covered are flashbacks, fire and explosion risks from gas leaks, over-pressure escapes of gases or liquids, electrostatic charges, and electrical insulation damages. The document emphasizes minimizing exposure to these risks during both normal and abnormal operating conditions.Protection Measures
Essential safety measures include use of flashback arresters, gas shut-off valves located near the torch, secure and standardized hose connections, emergency stop controls, and insulated cables. These provisions ensure operational control and quick response to emergencies.Responsibilities for Safety Compliance
- Manufacturers must adhere to EU directives and provide detailed operation and maintenance manuals.
- Integrators are responsible for correct installation and commissioning in line with regulatory requirements.
- Users must operate equipment according to prescribed safety protocols, ensure operator training, and maintain a rigorous service schedule.
Applications
This standard is crucial for industries utilizing thermal spraying technology for coating applications, such as aerospace, automotive, power generation, and manufacturing. Proper implementation of CEN/TR 15339-3:2014 enhances workplace safety by mitigating risks associated with thermal spray torches, including fire hazards, explosive atmospheres, and electrical dangers. It supports regulatory compliance and reduces downtime by promoting reliable and safe operation of thermal spraying equipment.
Typical applications include:
- Flame and HVOF thermal spraying processes requiring precise fuel and oxygen handling.
- Cold spray processes involving hot compressed gases and powder injection.
- Arc and plasma spraying operations needing robust electrical safety measures.
- Integration of safety controls in automated or manual spray systems.
