Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Specific requirements on the chemical composition of products intended to be used for the manufacture of packaging and packaging components

This European Standard specifies additional requirements on the chemical composition of aluminium and aluminium alloys intended for the manufacture of packaging and packaging components, as well as related specific technical conditions of inspection and delivery. The scope of this standard is fully defined by the final application.
NOTE   Some of the products listed in the present standard can be subject to patent or patent applications, and their listing herein does not in any way imply the granting of a licence under such patent right.
CEN/TC 132 affirms it is policy that in the case when a patentee refuses to grant licenses on standardised standard products under reasonable and not discriminatory conditions then this product shall be removed from the corresponding standard.

Overview

EN 14287:2004 is a European Standard developed by CEN that establishes specific chemical composition requirements for aluminium and aluminium alloys used in the manufacture of packaging and packaging components. This standard is essential for ensuring the safety, quality, and regulatory compliance of aluminium packaging materials across Europe. By defining stringent limits on heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium, EN 14287:2004 helps minimize harmful substances in packaging products, aligning with European Parliament and Council Directive 94/62/EC.

The scope of EN 14287:2004 covers all aluminium-based products intended as packaging materials - including primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging components - with clear provisions for inspection and delivery conditions. Compliance with this standard supports manufacturers in maintaining product safety, quality assurance, and environmental protection.

Key Topics

  • Chemical Composition Requirements
EN 14287:2004 mandates that aluminium and its alloys used for packaging must not intentionally introduce lead, mercury, cadmium, or hexavalent chromium.

    • Incidental presence of these metals combined must not exceed 100 µg/g.
    • Hexavalent chromium is not normally measured in aluminium alloys because it does not naturally occur.
  • Product Definition and Scope
Clarifies what constitutes packaging, packaging components, and packaging constituents based on EU directives, covering sales packaging, grouped packaging, and transport packaging (excluding transport containers such as road or air containers).

  • Inspection and Quality Assurance
The standard sets out specific inspection documents requirements, including issuing EN 10204 "3.1" inspection certificates to verify compliance.

    • Manufacturers must implement a quality management system equivalent to EN ISO 9001 to control product chemical composition.
    • Supplier qualification, raw material traceability, and statistical process control are key quality assurance measures.
  • Delivery and Ordering Conditions
Orders referring to EN 14287:2004 must specify the standard to ensure all deliveries conform to the chemical composition requirements.

    • Manufacturers may guarantee compliance over a specified period, supported by inspection certificates issued after delivery batches.

Applications

EN 14287:2004 is highly relevant for:

  • Manufacturers of Aluminium Packaging Products
Ensures that aluminium materials used for beverage cans, food containers, foil wraps, and other packaging components comply with safety and environmental standards.

  • Quality Control and Compliance Teams
Provides the framework to develop and maintain quality assurance programs focused on chemical composition control, supplier approvals, and certification processes.

  • Regulatory Bodies and Test Laboratories
Supports product testing and certification aligned with European packaging directives aimed at minimizing heavy metal contamination in packaging materials.

  • Environmental and Health Safety Advocates
Reinforces efforts to reduce hazardous substances in consumer packaging, promoting safer food contact materials and reducing environmental impact.

Related Standards

  • EN 10204: Metallic Products - Types of Inspection Documents
Defines the inspection certificates (e.g., 3.1 certificate) required for verifying material properties and compliance during delivery.

  • EN ISO 9001: Quality Management Systems - Requirements
Specifies quality management principles underpinning manufacturer responsibility for process control and product conformity.

  • CR 13695-1: Packaging - Requirements for Measuring and Verifying Heavy Metals in Packaging
Provides additional guidelines for testing and verifying the presence of regulated heavy metals in packaging materials.

  • European Parliament and Council Directive 94/62/EC
The overarching legislative framework governing packaging and packaging waste in the European Union, including restrictions on hazardous substances.

Adhering to EN 14287:2004 enables aluminium packaging producers to deliver products that meet strict European chemical safety requirements, facilitating market access and supporting sustainable packaging initiatives. This standard is a critical reference for ensuring quality and environmental compliance in the aluminium packaging industry.
