Overview

EN ISO 26985:2012 is an international standard specifying methods for the identification of linoleum resilient floor coverings and the determination of their cement content and ash residue. Adopted by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and originally developed by ISO/TC 219 “Floor coverings,” this standard establishes consistent procedures for analyzing linoleum materials used in flooring applications.

The standard ensures that manufacturers, testing laboratories, and quality control entities have reliable, reproducible protocols to verify linoleum products and quantify key composition elements such as binding agents (cement) and inorganic fillers (ash residue). This supports product conformity, material verification, and compliance with industry regulations.

Key Topics

  • Identification of Linoleum
Uses saponification with potassium hydroxide in methanol to distinguish linoleum from other resilient floor coverings by observing sample disintegration.

  • Determination of Cement Content
Measures the mass percentage of linoleum cement (a binder made from linseed and vegetable oils, rosin, and catalysts) in a sample after chemical treatment and drying.

  • Determination of Ash Residue
Evaluates the inorganic filler content by incinerating the linoleum sample at 500°C and weighing the remaining ash to calculate percentage mass.

  • Sampling and Preparation of Specimens
Provides guidelines for representative sampling across floor covering materials, recommending specimen sizes and removal of backing materials before testing.

  • Apparatus and Materials
Details the laboratory equipment needed, including graters, ovens, balances, centrifuges, and chemical reagents such as analytical-grade methanol and potassium hydroxide solutions.

  • Testing Conditions and Atmosphere
Specifies conditioning the samples at 23 ± 2°C with relative humidity at 50 ± 5% to ensure consistent and accurate test results.

  • Calculation Methods
Formulas for computing cement content and ash residue percentages are defined, ensuring standardized result reporting to the nearest 0.5%.

Applications

EN ISO 26985:2012 is essential for:

  • Manufacturers of Resilient Floor Coverings
To verify the composition and quality of linoleum products during production and pre-delivery inspections.

  • Testing Laboratories and Quality Control
Conducting standardized tests to identify linoleum and quantify its components for certification, regulatory compliance, and customer assurance.

  • Material Certification and Compliance
Assessing material consistency to meet national or international standards related to sustainable flooring and indoor environmental quality.

  • Research and Development
Providing a standardized baseline method for testing new linoleum formulations or evaluating alternative binder and filler compositions.

  • Procurement and Supply Chain Verification
Ensuring product authenticity and material compliance in commercial and public construction projects.

Related Standards

  • EN 670 - Earlier European standard for identification of linoleum and cement/ash determination; superseded by EN ISO 26985:2012.
  • ISO 26985:2008 - The original ISO version upon which the EN ISO adoption is based.
  • ISO/TC 219 - Technical committee developing standards for floor coverings.
  • Related Standards on Resilient Flooring
Standards covering performance characteristics, installation, and sustainability assessments of resilient floor coverings may complement testing under EN ISO 26985.
