Overview
The prEN 13037:2025 standard, developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), defines a precise instrumental method for determining pH in suspensions of soil improvers and growing media. This updated draft will supersede EN 13037:2011 and supports compliance with the EU Fertilizer Product Regulation (EU 2019/1009). Measuring pH is critical for evaluating soil amendment products, ensuring their suitability for agricultural and horticultural applications.
This method involves the preparation of a water suspension of the soil or substrate sample, followed by pH measurement using a calibrated pH meter. The standard provides detailed guidance on sample preparation, measurement procedures, calibration, and reporting, with validated performance demonstrated through interlaboratory studies.
Key Topics
- Scope and applicability: Routine pH determination in soil improvers and growing media suspensions, enabling quality control and regulatory compliance.
- Sampling and sample preparation: Following EN 12579:2024 for representative sampling, with preparation guidelines per prEN 13040-1:2025 to ensure consistent sample integrity.
- Measurement principle: Extraction of a suspension at a controlled temperature (22 °C ± 3 °C), using a 1:5 sample-to-water volume ratio, followed by instrumental pH measurement.
- Reagents and buffers: Use of high-purity water and standard buffer solutions at pH 4.00, 7.00, and between 9.0 and 9.5 to calibrate pH meters accurately.
- Instrumentation: Requirements for pH meters with temperature compensation, suitable glass or combined electrodes, analytical balances, and shaking devices to maintain proper sample suspension.
- Procedure specifics: Detailed suspension preparation for various forms of materials-solid, pre-shaped, liquid, or pasty-with shaking duration of 1 hour for equilibration before measurement.
- Calibration and measurement: Calibration with at least two buffer solutions, equilibration time for reading stabilization, and recording results to one decimal place.
- Safety considerations: Precautions for handling samples potentially containing sharp objects.
- Reporting requirements: Documentation of test conditions, sample identification, pH value, and bulk density for traceability and data integrity.
- Validation and performance: Method rigorously validated through ISO 5725-2 with reproducibility and repeatability tested on nine different soil improver and growing media matrices.
Applications
The prEN 13037:2025 standard is essential for laboratories, manufacturers, and quality controllers involved in:
- Agricultural and horticultural substrate manufacturing: Ensuring reliable pH measurements for soil improvers and growing media, vital for crop growth optimization.
- Fertilizer and soil amendment compliance: Meeting EU regulations on fertilizing products with accurate pH profiling supporting product labeling and safety.
- Environmental and soil quality monitoring: Assessing amendments’ impact on soil pH to maintain soil health and productivity.
- Product development and research: Consistent measurement of pH to evaluate new formulations and materials in soil enhancement technologies.
- Interlaboratory comparability: Standardized method enabling comparable data worldwide among CEN member states and associated laboratories.
