Overview

EN ISO 9454-1:2016 (Soft soldering fluxes - Part 1: Classification, labelling and packaging) defines a standardized coding system and packaging/label requirements for soft soldering fluxes. Published by CEN and identical to ISO 9454-1:2016, this Part 1 document classifies fluxes by their main active ingredients (e.g., rosin, modified resins, inorganic/acidic, amines) and halide content, and sets mandatory information and packaging resistance requirements for safe supply and traceability.

Key Topics

  • Flux classification and coding: Fluxes are encoded according to Table 1 in the standard based on flux basis, activation type and halide content. Examples from the text:
    • Phosphoric acid activated inorganic flux with halide < 0.01% → code 3311
    • Non-halide activated rosin flux → code 1131
  • Halide content bands: Guidance uses halide thresholds shown in the standard (e.g., <0.01%, <0.15%, 0.15–2.0%, >2.0%) to help grade fluxes for different applications.
  • Labelling requirements: Labels must include:
    • Supplier name and address
    • Product name
    • Reference to ISO 9454-1 and the flux classification code
    • Batch number and date of manufacture
    • Legal/safety information as required
    • Labels and containers must be resistant to the contained flux
  • Packaging: Containers must be chemically compatible and sufficiently robust for transport and storage.
  • Safety warning: The standard highlights potential hazards (corrosion, health risks, fire) and does not replace legal safety obligations.
  • Annexes:
    • Annex A - Grades of fluxes: guidance on typical uses (electronics, metal goods, plumbing) linked to halide content and flux type.
    • Annex B - Testing of fluxes: refers users to ISO 9455 test methods for flux property determination.

Applications

  • Manufacturers and formulators of soldering flux use the classification/coding to label and market products consistently.
  • Procurement, quality and compliance teams in electronics, electrotechnology, HVAC/plumbing, metal fabrication use the coding to select appropriate flux grades (e.g., low-halide fluxes for precision electronics).
  • Production and process engineers and soldering technicians rely on labelling information for correct flux handling, storage and traceability.
  • Regulatory, safety and transportation teams use the packaging and labelling rules to ensure compliance with national regulations and to manage hazards.

Related standards

  • ISO 9454-2 - Part 2: Performance requirements (complements Part 1)
  • ISO 9455 - Test methods for flux properties (referenced in Annex B)
  • EN 29454-1:1993 - superseded by EN ISO 9454-1:2016

This standard is essential for consistent flux classification, safe labelling, and compliant packaging across industries that depend on reliable soft soldering processes.

Introduction
Fluxes assist molten solder to wet metal surfaces to be joined by removing oxides and related
contaminations from the solder and surfaces of the parts during soldering. Fluxes also protect surfaces
from oxidation an assist wetting of the basis metals by molten solder.
Care is necessary when selecting a flux for a particular application, in order to ensure an adequate
service life of the assembly Factors such as the ease of residue removal, corrosiveness, possible health
and safety hazards and the efficacy of the flux should all be considered.
