FprEN 15877-2 is a draft CEN European Standard for external markings on heavy rail rolling stock. It specifies what markings coaches, motive power units, locomotives and railbound construction and maintenance machines carry, how those markings are presented, where they are placed on the vehicle, and what they mean. It is aimed at people who design, build, maintain, operate or assess these rail vehicles.

What does FprEN 15877-2 specify?

FprEN 15877-2 specifies the external markings for heavy rail vehicles that relate to technical and operational characteristics. It also sets rules for the markings’ appearance, positioning, shape and meaning, so the same information is presented consistently on different vehicle types.

The scope covers coaches, motive power units, locomotives and railbound construction and maintenance machines. It excludes freight wagons and service markings used for passenger information.

The document is organized into:

  • Clause 1 - Scope
  • Clause 2 - Normative references
  • Clause 3 - Terms, definitions and abbreviated terms
  • Clause 4 - Markings
  • Annex ZA - relationship with Directive (EU) 2016/797
  • Bibliography

Clause 4 is the core of the standard. It groups markings into general principles, colour, positioning, and detailed markings for identification, braking, restriction, electrical safety, equipment, interoperability and special uses.

What are the key requirements of FprEN 15877-2?

FprEN 15877-2 requires that markings be clear, visible and placed where staff can understand them quickly in practice. If a marking is specified in the standard, other markings for the same function should not be added, and advertising or unrelated graphics must not reduce legibility.

General presentation rules

The standard requires markings to be visible to staff standing nearby, with hazard markings positioned so the danger area is seen before it is reached. If contrast is insufficient, a contrasting frame is required. Markings generally appear on both sides of the vehicle unless the figures say otherwise.

It also requires durable markings that withstand weather, cleaning methods and a wide temperature range. In practice, this means the marking must remain readable over years of service, not just at delivery.

Colour, lettering and layout

Colours are tied to ISO 3864-4. If no special colour is stated, the informative part of the marking is black on a light background or white on a dark background. The standard uses Latin characters and Arabic numerals, with a non-italic sans serif font such as Univers 67, Helvetica or Arial.

The document also allows hand-produced markings to deviate within a stated tolerance. That matters for maintenance workshops that apply markings manually rather than by printed decal.

Vehicle identification and main data

Clause 4.4.2 defines the European vehicle number (EVN) layout for motive power units, locomotives, fixed formations and coaches. The EVN is applied to each sidewall and follows the structure used in the interoperability rules.

Clause 4.4.3 covers the principal vehicle data that operators and maintenance staff need at a glance. This includes masses, vehicle length, gauge marking, maintenance dates, lifting and jacking points, bogie or axle spacing, curve radius, ramp angle, wheelset numbering, bogie numbering, driver’s cab numbering and home depot marking.

Brake-related markings

Clause 4.4.4 is one of the most important parts of the document. It covers brake type markings, brake position abbreviations, changeover devices, braked weights, parking brake information, spring-applied parking brakes, air brake indicators and extra markings for disc brakes, composite blocks, ep brakes, EBO and PAS systems.

Braked weights must be calculated in accordance with EN 16834. In practice, this is the data operators use to assess braking capability and vehicle compatibility, so the marking has direct operational value.

Operational, safety and equipment markings

Later subclauses cover restriction markings and electrical hazard markings, including warnings for high voltage and overhead line areas. These markings help control access and reduce unsafe actions during operation and maintenance.

The standard also covers equipment-related markings such as electrical power systems, auxiliary electric power, public-address and train-bus equipment, battery location, battery isolation, earthing points and local power connections. Other markings identify water and toilet interfaces, pressure tightness, pneumatic suspension isolation, automatic couplers, nose doors, emergency couplers, fuel filling, sanding, windscreen wash water, flange lubrication and towing speed.

What terms does FprEN 15877-2 define?

  • decal - a picture or design printed on special material so it can adhere to a rail vehicle.
  • light reflectance value (LRV) - the amount of visible light reflected by a surface, used to judge readability and contrast.
  • contrast (K) - the visual difference between a marking and its background, assessed through LRV.
  • marking - lettering or symbols applied to a rail vehicle by decals, hand painting or another agreed method to provide information.
  • stencil - a template used to create the required lettering.
  • motive power unit - a self-propelled unit capable of carrying passengers and/or luggage/mail.
  • EVN - European Vehicle Number, the vehicle identification number used on rail vehicles.
  • ECM - Entity in Charge of Maintenance, the organization responsible for maintenance control.

Who uses FprEN 15877-2?

FprEN 15877-2 is used by manufacturers, vehicle designers and sign application suppliers who need to place markings correctly on coaches, locomotives, motive power units and railbound construction and maintenance machines. It is also used by maintenance organizations and ECMs when updating revision tables, brake markings, isolation markings and other safety-related labels.

Operators, keepers and approval or interoperability assessment bodies use it to check that the vehicle carries the right identification, brake, restriction and equipment markings for service. In practice, it supports both vehicle build and in-service marking control.

What changed in FprEN 15877-2 from the previous edition?

FprEN 15877-2 supersedes EN 15877-2:2013. The foreword states that the main technical changes are:

  • updated normative references
  • a new structure and editorial revision
  • revised and coloured markings
  • new markings added
  • unused markings deleted
  • Annex ZA updated
  • bibliography updated

Which standards are used with FprEN 15877-2?

FprEN 15877-2 refers to several standards that support the markings:

  • EN 14198 - used for brake-related performance marking of locomotives, especially where electrodynamic brake performance is assessed.
  • EN 15179 - provides the brake system context for ep brake, EBO and PAS markings.
  • EN 15663 - provides the vehicle mass definitions used in mass markings.
  • EN 15273-2 - provides rolling stock gauge classifications used in gauge marking.
  • EN 16834 - provides the calculation basis for braked weights.
  • EN 17343 - provides general terms and definitions.
  • EN ISO 7010 - provides registered safety signs used for hazard markings.
  • ISO 3864-4 - provides colourimetric and photometric properties for safety sign materials.

The document also refers in its clauses and bibliography to EN 15877-1, UIC 541-5, UIC 541-6, UIC 556, UIC 558, OPE TSI, Directive (EU) 2016/797 and related vehicle keeper marking rules.

What does the FprEN 15877-2 document contain?

FprEN 15877-2 contains figures, tables and placement examples for the full marking set used on heavy rail vehicles. Clause 4 uses figures to show EVN layouts, mass markings, length over buffers, gauge marking, maintenance tables, lifting and jacking points, wheelset and bogie numbering, brake markings, hazard signs, electrical equipment markings, interoperability tables and many other vehicle labels.

It also includes examples of how to combine markings with text, symbols, colours and frames so the result remains readable on the vehicle body. Several markings are shown with placeholder layouts for values that are filled in by the vehicle-specific data.

Annex ZA gives the correspondence between this European Standard and the essential requirements of Directive (EU) 2016/797 for operation and traffic management. The bibliography lists the related railway, safety-sign and interoperability documents used in the standard’s technical context.

4 Markings
4.1 General principles
4.1.1 The markings and the content of information are as given in 4.4.
Where a marking is specified in this document other markings indicating the same function/facility shall
not be applied.
4.1.2 A marking shall be located on the rail vehicle at a position easily visible by staff standing and
presented in a way clearly understandable to persons concerned. If the marking is intended to be read by
a person standing at ground level, it should not be located at a level higher than 2 000 mm above the
running surface.
For the assessment of the location criteria, the ground level should not be lower than 200 mm below the
running surface. In accordance with anthropometric data, the eye level of the reading person should not
be less than 1 500 mm
The visibility shall also be ensured if the marking needs to be read from a position other than ground
level or if it is placed on a non-vertical surface. Hazard markings, e.g. the warning marking for live
catenary, shall be located in such a position that they can be seen before the hazard zone is actually
reached.
4.1.3 Advertising, designs or other text or pictures not relating to markings applied to a rail vehicle
shall not affect the visibility and the clear and unambiguous understanding of the marking. Such
advertising or markings shall not encroach within 100 mm of the markings defined in this document.
In this case, a border of minimum 100 mm shall be placed around each marking or composition of
markings; these borders shall have a “neutral” colour or be the colour which accentuates the marking.
For all required markings, where there is not sufficient contrast between marking and background, the
marking shall have a contrasting frame of at least 5 mm.
Figure 1 shows examples of markings that due to sufficient contrast can stand alone and others which
need a frame to stick out from their background.

4.1.4 Unless otherwise indicated in the figures, the markings shall be placed on both sides of the rail
vehicle.
prEN 15877-2:2025 (E)
4.1.5 A marking shall ensure durable, non-degraded marking for a period of at least 6 years under a
temperature range of −40 °C to +90 °C. It shall be weather-resistant and resistant to cleaning agents, high
pressure water or air cleaning and cleaning machines with brushes.
4.1.6 Markings shall use Latin characters and Arabic numerals. The font shall be non-italic, sans serif
and of a type such as Univers 67, Helvetica or Arial.
4.1.7 The distances between value and unit shall be clearly separated by space.
NOTE See EN ISO 80000-1:2022, e.g. 7.1.4.
4.1.8 The dimensions indicated in this document may have a tolerance of plus or minus 10 % when the
marking is hand produced.
4.2 Colour
4.2.1 Colours used shall correspond to ISO 3864-4:2011 (see Annex A of this document).
4.2.2 Unless otherwise indicated in the figures of this document, the colours need not be made of retro-
reflecting material.
4.2.3 The luminance contrast k shall correspond to ISO 3864-4:2011.
4.2.4 If there is no extra colour specification (e.g. yellow, green) indicated with the specification of a
marking, the colour of the informative part (the symbol, letters/numbers, borders and lines) shall be
black on a light uniform background or white on a dark background. The background for decals, stencils
and painted markings may be transparent and thereby represented by the colour of the material on which
the marking is placed, i.e. the bodyside of the rail vehicle. In any case, when a part of the marking is
indicated to be the rail vehicle colour background, the requirement to the luminance contrast shall be
met.
4.3 Positioning
Markings should be positioned in accordance with Figure 2, Figure 3 and Figure 4. The list of markings is
contained in Table 1 and their position and meaning described in 4.4. Not all markings can be
accommodated in the figures. If no specific position for a marking is prescribed in 4.5, the following
general rules shall be followed.
A marking indicating a lever, a button, a nozzle, an indicator, hidden equipment or a point for action (e.g.
a lifting point) shall be located next to that item (normally above, beneath or on the cover concealing the
item) and may not lead to any misunderstanding or confusion.

4.4 Details of rail vehicle markings
4.4.1 General
The markings in this document are exemplarily displayed in Univers 67.
Where inscriptions are based on existing, measured or particularly defined values, these values in the
figures are substituted by placeholders as shown in Figure 5.
— For digits the placeholders are shown as oval forms (“zeros”) with dashed lines.
— For letters the placeholders are shown as rectangles with dashed lines.
— For words, letter-combinations or sentences the placeholders are shown as rectangles with dot and
dash lines.
They shall be replaced by the correct elements, e.g. designated or calculated values.
For different inscriptions, when there is no sufficient space, it is possible to use a narrow type of the
chosen font with a width of B1/B = 0,84.
