Overview
EN 4608-001:2019 is a CEN aerospace technical specification for fire resistant / fire proof electrical cables used in aircraft electrical systems. It covers single and twisted multicore assemblies that are screened (braided) and jacketed, designed for continuous operation between –65 °C and 260 °C (ambient plus conductor rise). Cables to this standard are rated for 600 V AC at frequencies up to 2 000 Hz and must maintain specific dielectric strength after exposure to a 1 100 °C flame (fire resistant: 5 minutes exposure; fire proof: 15 minutes exposure).
Key Topics and Requirements
- Cable types: single-core and twisted multicore assemblies, braided screening and outer jackets.
- Electrical ratings: rated AC voltage 600 V, frequency up to 2 000 Hz.
- Temperature rating: long-term operation up to 260 °C; low-temperature operation to –65 °C.
- Fire performance: dielectric strength retention after exposure to 1 100 °C flame for defined durations (5 min / 15 min).
- Materials & construction: conductor, insulation, screen and jacket materials must avoid corrosion and microbial attack and comply with applicable product standards.
- Test methods: comprehensive testing per referenced aerospace test standards (EN 3475 series) including:
- Electrical tests (voltage proof, insulation resistance, capacitance, impedance)
- Fire tests (fire resistance, flammability, smoke density, toxicity)
- Mechanical and thermal tests (bending, torsion, thermal shock, abrasion, ageing)
- Screening and marking checks (braid pushback, permanence of marking)
- Qualification & acceptance: procedures for qualification, first-article inspection, periodic re‑qualification and routine acceptance testing are specified.
- Identification & packaging: marking, labelling and delivery length requirements ensure traceability.
Applications and Who Uses It
EN 4608-001:2019 is intended for:
- Aerospace OEMs and Tier suppliers specifying in-flight electrical wiring and harnesses
