Overview

EN 15543:2008 - published by CEN - is a European standard for glass packaging that defines the dimensions and construction of screw thread finishes for bottles for non‑carbonated liquids. It covers a range of finish types used with tamper‑evident and pilfer‑proof closures, specifying thread geometry, bore entrance, transfer bead and key tolerances to ensure closure compatibility and reliable sealing. Note: this finish is not suitable for liquids stored horizontally.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and finish types: Defines eight finish types (A–H) including standard, deep, extra deep, and variants for long‑skirt pilfer‑proof closures and optional transition/support beads.
  • Dimensional tables: Detailed dimensions for each finish type and common sizes are provided in tabular form (Tables 1–3), including pitch, mean diameters and tuck‑under limits.
  • Thread profile construction: Specifies thread geometry, cutter parameters and the last full‑depth thread requirements (Figure and Table references).
  • Bore entrance and transfer bead: Construction of the bore entrance profile (R dimension) and transfer bead are specified; R = (0.8 ± 0.3) mm for sizes 18–25 and R = (1.0 ± 0.3) mm for sizes 28 and larger.
  • X and Y dimensions: For finishes intended for long‑skirt closures (types B, D and H), X and Y neck dimensions and ovality limits are defined to assure skirt fit and tamper evidence.
  • Quality/tolerance requirements: Finishes must be free from cracks or defects that affect sealing. Verticality tolerance (T) for satisfactory closure application is referenced to CE.T.I.E DT2 and limited to T = 3.5 mm for bottles ≥ 320 mm height. Ovality and mean diameter tolerances for optimal closure application are also specified.
  • Notes on compatibility: The standard recognises use of in‑bore inserts (pourers) and states where finishes can accommodate them.

Applications and users

EN 15543:2008 is used by:

  • Glass bottle designers and manufacturers - to specify neck and finish dimensions for production tooling and moulds.
  • Closure and cap manufacturers - to design compatible tamper‑evident and long‑skirt closures.
  • Bottlers and packagers (beverages, food, non‑carbonated liquids) - to select bottle/closure pairings and set acceptance criteria.
  • Quality engineers and testing labs - for inspection, gauge design (Parnaby gauge references) and conformity checks.
  • Procurement and regulatory teams - to standardise specifications across suppliers and markets.

Practical benefits include improved closure interchangeability, reduced seal failures, and streamlined supply‑chain compatibility for non‑carbonated liquid packaging.

Related standards

  • CE.T.I.E data sheet DT2 - referenced for bottle verticality tolerances and standard tolerances for bottles.
  • CEN/TC 261 publications - related guidance on packaging standards and national implementation.
