Overview

prEN 15543 - "Glass packaging - Finishes for bottles - Screw thread finishes for bottles for non-carbonated liquids" is a CEN draft European Standard (submitted for enquiry) that updates and will supersede EN 15543:2008. It defines the dimensional and construction requirements for the family of BVP screw thread finishes used with closures for beverages and other non‑carbonated liquids. The document covers standard, deep and extra‑deep neck geometries and includes provisions for long‑skirt pilfer‑proof closures and in‑bore inserts (pourers).
Important: BVP finishes covered in this standard are not suitable for liquids stored horizontally.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Finish designation and sizing: Clear designation format (e.g., BVP 31,5Std44) and common nominal sizes (typical range from about 18 mm up to 46 mm).
  • Categories: Three categories by cylindrical‑zone height below the thread - Standard (Std, ~0 mm), Deep (H, ~7 mm) and Extra Deep (EH, ~20.3 mm).
  • Types A–H: Eight finish types (A–H) covering standard, deep, extra‑deep, optional transition bead, and variants with X and Y dimensions for long‑skirt closures or support beads.
  • Thread profile and pitch: Thread form, cutter geometry and acceptable TPI/pitch limits are specified to ensure compatibility with closures.
  • Bore entrance and transfer bead: Construction and radii of the bore entrance, dimensions for transfer/locking bead and measurement exclusions around mould seams.
  • Dimensional control: Tolerances for diameters (T, L, N), thread ovality (Parnaby gauge referenced), and specific X/Y tolerances for types B and D to ensure closure engagement and tamper‑evidence performance.
  • Capping and production guidance: Requirements to inspect and verify capping equipment when changing bottle or cap batches and to control surface treatments so they do not exceed dimensional limits.
  • Verticality control: Additional checks for bent necks and bottle verticality (reference to Cetie DT02.00 practice) for reliable sealing and pilfer‑proof performance.

Practical applications

  • Ensures interchangeability and reliable sealing between glass bottle necks and closures (including tamper‑evident, long‑skirt caps).
  • Supports use cases in bottled water, juices, non‑carbonated beverages, liquid foodstuffs, and other non‑carbonated liquid products.
  • Facilitates compatibility for closures with pourers or in‑bore inserts (refer to Cetie Datasheet GME 30.10).

Who should use this standard

  • Glass bottle designers and manufacturers
  • Cap and closure producers (aluminium/plastic pilfer‑proof caps)
  • Packaging engineers, bottlers and filling/capping equipment suppliers
  • Quality and regulatory teams ensuring dimensional conformity and tamper‑evidence

Related documents

  • EN 15543:2008 (to be superseded)

3.1
BVP screw thread finish
screw thread finish
finish designed to take a BVP type closure having a tamper-evident feature which breaks on first opening
Note 1 to entry: The finish is capped with a closure that might or might not have an extended (long) skirt to cover
part of the neck of the bottle. The finish, with the appropriate bore control, might also be fitted with an in-bore
insert to control the pour or refillability, as defined in the Cetie Datasheet GME 30.10.
4 Designation
The finish used can be defined successively by its name (BVP), the diameter (in mm), the category (H, Std,
or EH) and the height of the closure (in mm).
EXAMPLES
BVP 31,5Std44
BVP 30H60
If a specification of internal diameter is needed (for pourer or insert), it is recommended to specify it in the
designation. Example: BVP 30H60 / GME30.10
Note that the size and height denominations are approximations to nearest “whole number” values given
in the specification. See Table 5.
5 Recommendations
All finishes should be free from cracks and defects that would adversely affect sealing performance.
Container verticality should be controlled as specified in Clause 11
During capping, when changing between different batches of bottles conforming to this document or
different batches of caps, it is necessary to verify the setting of the capping equipment.

The standard prEN 15543 provides a comprehensive guideline for the dimensions of screw thread finishes specifically designed for bottles that contain non-carbonated liquids. It establishes a range of finishes categorized as “BVP,” ensuring that manufacturers can create compatible closures for a variety of non-carbonated beverages and other products. The document meticulously outlines the essential dimensions associated with standard and long skirt pilfer proof finishes, which are pivotal for maintaining the integrity and functionality of the bottles. One of the significant strengths of prEN 15543 is its clarity and precision in specifications, which facilitates uniform manufacturing practices across the industry. By standardizing the screw thread finishes, the document promotes interoperability between different brands and manufacturers, which is critical for supply chain efficiency and consumer convenience. Furthermore, the inclusion of major sizes currently in use allows for immediate applicability in the production process, reducing the learning curve and potential errors in design and manufacturing. In terms of relevance, this standard addresses a notable gap in the packaging industry by focusing solely on non-carbonated liquids, a segment that requires specific attention due to its unique handling and storage needs. The explicit mention that this finish is not suitable for liquids stored horizontally underlines the document’s practical approach, guiding producers in making informed decisions regarding packaging solutions. Overall, prEN 15543 stands out as a vital document within the realm of glass packaging, offering a robust framework that bolsters industry practices and supports the production of safe, effective, and reliable packaging for non-carbonated beverages and other liquid products. The standard’s focus on screw thread finishes enhances not only the manufacturing process but also consumer confidence in the product integrity.
