Overview
EN 4050-2:2012 - part of the Aerospace series published by CEN - defines the performance of ultrasonic inspection for metallic materials such as bars, plates, forging stock and forgings. This Part 2 document specifies how ultrasonic testing shall be performed (calibration, scanning, sensitivity and flaw evaluation). General requirements are given in EN 4050-1, and acceptance criteria are covered in EN 4050-4.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and implementation: Procedures must follow the inspection schedule or order; implementation varies with technique (manual, automatic, immersion, contact).
- Calibration: The flaw detector time base and distance/amplitude calibration are required so interface and target echoes are identifiable.
- Scanning parameters: Defined scanning speed, pitch and scanning index to ensure reference reflectors produce reliable indications (at least two echoes not more than 6 dB down).
- Wave modes: Longitudinal, shear, surface and Lamb waves - the chosen wave mode must be specified in the technique or schedule.
- Sensitivity corrections: Apply corrections for distance/amplitude effects, attenuation, shape effects and acceptance-standard adjustments to achieve working sensitivity.
- Performance recording: Equipment characteristics and performance data of probe, flaw detector and facility must be measured and recorded for reproducible inspection.
- Material characteristics:
- Attenuation: Measured (preferably against similar reference blocks) for working sensitivity and flaw evaluation.
- Structure noise (grass): Measured at inspection settings; detectable flaws must be ≥ 6 dB above grass.
- Flaw recognition and thresholds: Establish monitor threshold levels to ensure diminished echoes (due to depth, tilt, attenuation or pitch) are evaluated; manual contact may add +6 dB correction.
- Setting-up:
- Probe and frequency selection aligned to component geometry and required signal-to-noise (≥ 6 dB).
- Immersion water gap and contact couplant specifications to preserve energy transmission.
- Reference sensitivity methods: Described methods include Distance Gain Size (DGS) and Flat Bottom Hole (FBH) techniques for establishing reference and working sensitivity and for flaw evaluation.
Applications and users
- Practical for aerospace manufacturers, forging shops, NDT (nondestructive testing) laboratories, and quality/inspection engineers responsible for ultrasonic inspection of structural metallic parts.
- Used to set up, calibrate and validate ultrasonic inspection systems for bars, plates, forgings and forging stock where reproducible detection and sizing of flaws are critical to airworthiness and safety.
