Overview
EN 1014-4:2010 (CEN) specifies a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the determination of the water-extractable phenols content of creosote. The standard is intended for creosotes containing more than 10 g of water-extractable phenols per kilogram. The method is widely used for phenolic analysis in creosote quality control, regulatory compliance and environmental monitoring of creosoted timber.
Key Topics
- Analytical principle: Water extraction of creosote followed by reversed-phase HPLC with isocratic elution. Detection is by ultraviolet absorbance at 276 nm.
- Scope & applicability: Applicable for creosotes with >10 g/kg water-extractable phenols for reasons of precision.
- Sample preparation: Procedures are provided for both "large" (e.g. 100 g creosote mixed with equal water in a separating funnel) and "small" samples (e.g. 1 g creosote with twice the water in a screw-capped vial). Duplicate test samples are required.
- Calibration & standards: A combined standard phenols solution is prepared and calibration solutions are made daily. The method uses a multi-phenol reference to quantify individual phenols and their sum.
- HPLC configuration: Typical column is C18, 250 mm × 4 mm (5 µm). Flow is commonly set at 1.0 ml/min; detection at 276 nm. Mobile phase composition and mixing options are defined in the standard.
- Precision: Repeatability: duplicate results from the same operator suspect if differing by more than 5% of the smaller. Reproducibility between labs suspect if differing by more than 15% of the smaller.
Practical notes:
- Ensure the creosote sample is a single phase; heat gently if crystals are present.
- Prepare calibration solutions each day and store standards in brown glass below 10 °C when not in use.
- Report results as grams of water-extractable phenols per kilogram of creosote, rounded to the nearest 1 g/kg.
Applications
- Regulatory compliance: Demonstrates compliance with limits or specifications for creosote formulations and treated timber.
- Quality control: Routine laboratory testing during production or acceptance testing to monitor phenolic content and batch consistency.
- Environmental monitoring: Assessment of creosote-derived phenols in creosoted timber or leachates to inform environmental risk and service-life assessments.
- Forensic & product investigation: Useful when evaluating changes in creosote composition in service, noting that measured water-extractable phenols in timber extracts may be lower than in the original creosote due to evaporation or leaching.
