Overview

EN ISO 10462:2013/A1:2019 is Amendment 1 to the international standard ISO 10462:2013 on gas cylinders - acetylene cylinders - periodic inspection and maintenance. Approved by CEN in January 2019 and published in August 2019, this amendment updates the original document without modification to its core scope. It was prepared by ISO/TC 58 (Gas cylinders) with input from CEN/TC 23 (Transportable gas cylinders).

This amendment clarifies procedures for the handling and transport of rejected acetylene cylinders and highlights the need to consider additional national requirements such as waste and environmental management when rendering cylinders unserviceable.

Key Topics

  • Periodic inspection and maintenance: Continues to support standardized inspection and upkeep practices for acetylene cylinders (as defined in ISO 10462:2013).
  • Handling of rejected cylinders: Amendment 1 replaces the last paragraph of clause 9 to address transport and disposition of cylinders judged unsuitable for service.
  • Transport and marking: Where rejected cylinders must be taken to a facility to be rendered unserviceable, the amendment recommends clear marking prior to transport (for example, by white stencil painting) unless specific national waste/environmental rules apply.
  • Regulatory alignment: Reminds stakeholders that additional requirements (waste management, environmental controls) may supersede the amendment’s guidance and must be observed.

Applications

This amendment is directly relevant to organizations and professionals involved in the lifecycle of acetylene cylinders, including:

  • Cylinder inspectors and maintenance technicians
  • Gas suppliers and distributors
  • Occupational health and safety managers
  • Transport and waste-management contractors handling end-of-life cylinders
  • National standards bodies and compliance officers

Practical value includes clearer responsibilities for marking and transporting rejected cylinders, improved coordination with environmental and waste-management rules, and strengthened compliance with CEN-adopted requirements across member countries.

Related Standards

  • ISO 10462:2013 – Base standard for periodic inspection and maintenance of acetylene cylinders.
  • EN ISO 10462:2013 – European adoption of the ISO 10462:2013 standard.
  • EN ISO 10462:2013/A1:2019 – This amendment as endorsed by CEN.
  • ISSUING BODIES: ISO/TC 58 (Gas cylinders) and CEN/TC 23 (Transportable gas cylinders).

ICS classification: 23.020.35 (Gas cylinders).

Note: This document is an amendment and does not replace the full technical requirements of ISO 10462:2013. Users should consult the full standard and national regulations for detailed inspection intervals, test methods and mandatory legal obligations.
