Overview
EN ISO 14246:2022/A1:2025 is the latest amendment to the international standard governing the manufacturing tests and examinations of gas cylinder valves. Published by CEN in collaboration with ISO, this amendment updates EN ISO 14246:2022 to ensure continued safety, reliability, and performance of cylinder valves used globally. The document becomes a binding national standard across multiple European countries by March 2026, supporting harmonized quality control in the gas cylinder industry.
This standard focuses on the critical aspects of testing gas cylinder valves during manufacturing, emphasizing leak tightness and valve integrity. It incorporates updated definitions, testing procedures, and measurements to comply with the latest safety requirements and technological advances.
Key Topics
Scope Update: The amendment revises the coverage of cylinder valves, specifically including main valves for bundles of cylinders (excluding ball valves), broadening its applicability within the gas cylinder sector.
Terminology and Definitions: Incorporates updated terms from ISO 10297:2024 for more precise definitions related to pressure receptacles and leak tightness, ensuring consistency with recent standards.
Leak Tightness Testing:
- Introduces detailed notes and figures to distinguish between external leak tightness and internal leak tightness.
- Defines leakage in (flow into the valve during vacuum testing) and leakage out (flow out of the valve).
- Specifies procedures for detecting and measuring leaks during manufacturing tests.
Leakage Limits:
- The amendment sets maximum acceptable leakage rates:
- 6 cm³/h for individual cylinder valves or main valves.
- 12 cm³/h for valves on Valve-Integrated Pressure Regulators (VIPR).
- Ensures tested valves meet stringent criteria to prevent gas loss and maintain safety.
- The amendment sets maximum acceptable leakage rates:
Alternative Testing for Special Valves:
- Provides guidelines for valves, like medical VIPR type C, where conventional leak measurements through the valve outlet are insufficient.
- Allows for alternative internal leak tightness tests for transport and storage configurations.
Updating References: Replaces earlier normative references with ISO 10297:2024 to align with the most current specifications and graphical illustrations.
Applications
The EN ISO 14246:2022/A1:2025 amendment plays a crucial role in enhancing quality assurance in the following areas:
Gas Cylinder Manufacturing: Ensures strict quality control of cylinder valves during fabrication, reducing risks of leakage and failure.
Valve Design and R&D: Guides manufacturers and engineers in developing valve designs that meet updated leak tightness and testing requirements.
Medical Gas Equipment: Addresses specific testing needs for specialized valves used in medical applications, ensuring reliable gas delivery.
Transportable Gas Cylinders: Supports testing protocols for valves on cylinders used in transport and storage, improving safety across logistics chains.
Regulatory Compliance: Assists manufacturers and testing bodies in meeting European and international regulatory demands for gas cylinder safety.
Related Standards
This amendment complements and references other international and European standards, including:
ISO 10297:2024 – Specifications for cylinder valves, source of updated definitions and figures used in leak testing protocols.
EN ISO 14246:2022 – The original base standard defining manufacturing tests and examinations for cylinder valves, now updated by this amendment.
Standards on Pressure Regulators (ICS 23.060.40) – Related to pressure regulation components attached to cylinders, often integrated with valve assemblies.
Technical Committees ISO/TC 58 and CEN/TC 23 standards – Covering broader aspects of gas cylinder safety and transportable gas container regulations.
By adhering to EN ISO 14246:2022/A1:2025, manufacturers and quality assurance professionals can ensure gas cylinder valves meet the highest standards of safety, reliability, and performance. This amendment supports the global gas industry by harmonizing testing approaches and enhancing the durability and leak tightness of essential valve components.
