Building hardware - Gasket and weatherstripping for doors, windows, shutters and curtain walling - Part 3: Deflection recovery test method

This part 3 of prEN 33/WI 131/246 specifies the method to be used to select, percentage of recovery after being deflected through its working range under the conditions laid down in the test. The test has been devised to cover all likely gasket and weatherstripping shapes or materials.

Overview

EN 12365-3:2003 (CEN) specifies the test method to determine the percentage of deflection recovery for gaskets and weatherstripping used in doors, windows, shutters and curtain walling. The standard covers sample selection, conditioning, test apparatus and measurement procedures. Its purpose is to provide repeatable, comparable results to support performance classification and informed product selection.

Why it matters: consistent deflection recovery measurement helps manufacturers, test houses and specifiers assess durability, fit and sealing performance under realistic working ranges.

Key Topics

  • Scope: selection, preparation, conditioning and testing of gasket/weatherstripping samples to determine percentage recovery after compression/deflection to minimum working width.
  • Working temperature ranges: six grades are identified (examples from the standard):
    • Grade 1: 0 °C to +45 °C
    • Grade 2: -10 °C to +55 °C
    • Grade 3: -20 °C to +85 °C
    • Grade 4: -25 °C to +100 °C
    • Grade 5: -40 °C to +70 °C
    • Grade 6: 0 °C to +200 °C
  • Deflection recovery performance grades: eight grades from 0 (no requirement) to 7 (> 90 %), with intermediate bands (>30–40 %, >40–50 %, etc.).
  • Test apparatus: a compression block for mounting and compressing test pieces (see informative Annex A) and an electrically heated oven compliant with ISO 188 Method A.
  • Test tolerances and sample preparation: laboratory temperature and humidity tolerances, deflection and measurement tolerances (e.g. temperature ±1 °C, deflection ±0.5 mm, free‑height measurement accuracy ±0.05 mm). Test pieces typically 100–500 mm long and conditioned at 23 °C ±2 °C, RH 50 % ±5 % before testing.
  • Result calculation: deflection recovery Dr is expressed as a percentage using the formula Dr = (a - a1) / WR × 100, where a is free height before test, a1 is free height after test and WR is working range. Three replicate specimens are tested and the average (to one decimal) is reported.

Applications

  • Selection and specification of gaskets and weatherstripping for doors, windows, shutters and curtain wall systems.
  • Quality control and product development to verify recovery performance across working temperature grades.
  • Supporting compliance with building hardware performance classifications and lifecycle expectations.
