Overview

EN 12910:2012 (CEN) is the European product standard for garnet used in the treatment of water intended for human consumption. It defines identification, required characteristics, test methods and information on use in drinking-water filtration systems. The standard covers both main commercial garnet types (almandite and andradite) and gives practical requirements for manufacturers, suppliers and water treatment professionals.

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Identification and composition
    • Chemical names: Almandite (Fe3Al2(SiO4)3) and Andradite (Ca3Fe2(SiO4)3).
    • Typical chemical composition ranges and note that mineralogy varies by deposit.
  • Particle size distribution
    • Determined according to EN 12902 test methods.
    • Described by effective size (d10), uniformity coefficient (U < 1.5) or particle size ranges.
    • Permitted oversize/undersize mass fractions: typically 5% for multimedia filter layers, 10% for single media filters, 15% for support layers.
  • Density
    • Absolute densities (typical): Almandite ≈ 4.10 g/cm³, Andradite ≈ 3.8 g/cm³.
    • Bulk density (loose/packed) ranges are specified by type (values given in the standard).
    • Guidance: garnet with absolute density < 3.8 g/cm³ should not be used in multimedia sand–garnet filters to avoid media intermixing.
  • Chemical and purity requirements
    • Specifies minimum purity and limits for common impurities; manufacturers must notify users of additional impurities or additives.
    • Recommends checking national drinking-water regulations before use.
  • Test methods and sampling
    • Sampling and analysis procedures reference EN 12902; methods cover particle size, bulk density and extractables.
  • Labelling, transport and storage
    • Delivery formats: bags, semi‑bulk, bulk; marking must include product name, grade, net mass, supplier and the statement “This product conforms to EN 12910”.
    • Garnet is not classified as dangerous for transport and has unlimited storage life if kept dry.

Applications

  • Primary use as a high-density filtration and support medium in single and multilayer filters for drinking water treatment.
  • Used as a support layer beneath sand or other media and as seeding material in specific reactors.
  • Selected where high density is needed to improve separation during backwashing and to prevent media mixing.

Who should use this standard

  • Water utilities and municipal drinking-water engineers
  • Filter media manufacturers and suppliers
  • Consultancy and design engineers for filtration systems
  • Regulatory bodies and testing laboratories
