Overview
prEN 16510-2-9:2026 is a draft European Standard developed by CEN that specifies requirements and procedures for the assessment and verification of constancy of performance (AVCP) for residential solid fuel burning appliances. This part focuses especially on appliances that are fired batchwise with wood pellets in fuel baskets, such as roomheaters, inset appliances, and cookers. These are manually fueled, intermittent burning appliances intended primarily for space heating and, in some configurations, also cooking applications in residential buildings.
The standard applies to appliances only when operated with closed firedoors and with fully integrated wood pellet baskets that are an integral appliance component. The combustion chamber may be reconfigured, as per manufacturer’s instructions, to allow alternate use with wood logs or briquettes, but these fuels are not used simultaneously.
Key Topics
- Assessment and Verification of Constancy of Performance (AVCP): Defines procedures for verifying that appliances meet consistent performance criteria over time.
- Emission Limits: Establishes requirements for carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), organic gaseous compounds (OGC), and particulate matter (PM) emissions at various heat outputs.
- Efficiency and Performance: Specifies methods to measure space and water heat output, minimum efficiencies, and energy efficiency classifications.
- Safety and Installation: Covers safety in everyday use, installation proximity to combustible materials, flue gas temperatures, and minimum draught requirements.
- Environmental Sustainability: Refers to life cycle assessment following EN 15804, addressing global warming potential and other sustainability metrics.
- Descriptive Features: Stipulates information to support correct appliance selection and installation, such as compatibility with ventilation systems and appliance mass for building statics.
- Scope Limitations: Excludes mechanically fed appliances, those with fan-assisted combustion air, or integrated boilers from its scope.
Applications
Appliances covered by prEN 16510-2-9 are intended for:
- Space Heating: Heating residential spaces using wood pellets loaded in integrated baskets.
- Cooking: When tested and designed for this use, these appliances can also serve as residential cookers.
- Flexible Fuel Use: While optimized for pellet burning, many models can be reconfigured for wood logs or briquettes, with performance verified separately per fuel.
- Site-Specific Installation: Appliances may be supplied fully assembled or as prefabricated components for on-site assembly, following detailed installation instructions.
- Building Integration: The standard supports architects, builders, and installation professionals by ensuring compatibility with standard building features, including ventilation and structural support.
Related Standards
prEN 16510-2-9 works in conjunction with related European standards to create a consistent regulatory environment for solid fuel appliances:
- EN 16510-1:2022 - General requirements and test methods for residential solid fuel burning appliances. Acts as the foundational standard referenced throughout Part 2-9.
- EN 15804:2012+A2:2019 - Provides rules for developing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), used here for environmental sustainability assessments.
- EN 16510-2 series - Other parts of EN 16510-2 cover roomheaters, inset appliances, slow heat release stoves, mechanically fed pellet stoves, and combination or gravimetric appliances.
- National Building Codes and CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations - These ensure consistent application of this draft standard across European countries.
prEN 16510-2-9 supports improved safety, energy efficiency, and sustainability in residential heating, ensuring that pellet-fired appliances contribute positively to modern, low-emission home environments. By complying with this standard, manufacturers, installers, and homeowners benefit from robust product performance, regulatory confidence, and environmental consideration.
