Systems for renovation of drains and sewers - Lining with a rigidly anchored plastics inner layer (RAPL)

This European Standard specifies performance requirements and describes test methods for pipes and fittings for the renovation of underground drain and sewer systems by lining with a single rigid annulus of structural cementitious grout formed behind a plastics inner layer. This plastics layer serves as permanent formwork anchored to the grout. It is applicable to plastics inner layers and grout systems with or without steel reinforcement.
This European Standard does not apply to the structural design of the lining system.
NOTE   Systems with multiple annuli are available, but these are controlled by patent rights and not covered by this European Standard.

Overview

EN 16506:2014 - Systems for renovation of drains and sewers - Lining with a rigidly anchored plastics inner layer (RAPL) - is a CEN European Standard that specifies performance requirements and test methods for pipes and fittings used to renovate underground drains and sewers by forming a single rigid annulus of structural cementitious grout behind a plastics inner layer. The plastics inner layer acts as permanent formwork and is anchored to the grout. The standard covers grout systems with or without steel reinforcement but does not cover structural design of the lining. Multi‑annulus patented systems are excluded.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and terminology: Definitions for RAPL, anchored plastics inner layer, annulus, grout system, M stage (manufactured components) and I stage (installed, grout-cured assembly).
  • Materials and appearance: Requirements for plastics inner layer materials and cementitious grout systems; applicable material characteristics and testing methods.
  • Geometric and jointing requirements: Dimensional characteristics for profiled plastics strips, PE sheets with integral anchors, and jointing/welding or mechanical connection methods.
  • Performance tests: Normative test methods include:
    • Annex A - anchoring strength (pull‑off) test for the plastics inner layer.
    • Annex B - I‑stage crushing strength test for the cured lining.
  • Fittings and lateral connections: Material, geometric and performance requirements for fittings and lateral reconnection collars.
  • Installation, marking and documentation: Guidance on preparatory work, handling, storage, equipment, lining termination in manholes, reconnection procedures, final inspection, product marking and required documentation.

Practical applications

EN 16506 is intended for use in the renovation of underground drain and sewer systems where a plastics inner layer is permanently anchored to a cementitious grout annulus. Typical applications:

  • Lining and rehabilitation of sewers and drains to restore structural integrity and provide corrosion protection.
  • Rehabilitation projects requiring a durable inside surface provided by plastics formwork and structured grout.
  • Systems with or without embedded steel reinforcement where the plastics layer serves as permanent formwork.

Who uses this standard

  • Manufacturers of RAPL pipe components and grout systems
  • Design and civil/municipal engineers specifying renovation solutions
  • Installation contractors and rehabilitation specialists
  • Testing laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
  • Asset owners and utilities procuring sewer renovation works
