Overview
EN ISO 10893-2:2011/A1:2020 is an amendment to the international standard for non-destructive testing (NDT) of steel tubes, specifically covering automated eddy current testing of seamless and welded (except submerged arc‑welded) steel tubes for the detection of imperfections. Published by CEN and identical to ISO 10893-2:2011/Amd 1:2020, Amendment A1 updates the reference notch dimensions used for calibration and acceptance/retest criteria used when evaluating test signals.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Automated eddy current testing of seamless and welded steel tubes (excluding submerged arc‑welded) to detect surface and near‑surface imperfections.
- Reference notch dimension change: The width of the reference notch (used for calibrating eddy current equipment) is revised to state “The width of the reference notch shall not exceed 1 mm.” This replaces the previous conditional definition that referenced the notch depth.
- Acceptance/retest criteria change: The retest rule in clause 8.2 is amended so that one retest is required rather than two. Specifically, if after one retest all signals are below the trigger/alarm level, the tube is deemed to have passed; otherwise it is designated as suspect.
- Calibration and signal thresholds: While the amendment does not change fundamental eddy current physics, it standardizes calibration geometry and the decision logic for retests, affecting how trigger/alarm levels are applied in practice.
Practical applications
- Ensures consistent calibration of eddy current probes and reference blocks across manufacturers and inspection facilities by standardizing reference notch width.
- Simplifies the inspection decision workflow by reducing the retest requirement from two to one, which can affect throughput, recordkeeping and disposition of suspect tubes.
- Applies to routine production inspection, incoming tube acceptance, and quality assurance for piping, pressure tubes, heat‑exchanger tubing and other steel tube products where surface/near-surface flaws are critical.
- Useful in contract specifications where buyers and suppliers need clear, harmonized acceptance criteria for automated NDT.
Who would use this standard
- NDT technicians and laboratory managers performing automated eddy current testing
- Quality and inspection engineers at tube manufacturers and end‑users
- Procurement and specification writers who reference NDT acceptance criteria
- Calibration and test‑equipment suppliers for eddy current systems
